Bath/Closet Layout Help Needed!

We are about to start work on a big facelift to our 1959 house. Money prohibits us from adding square footage, so we need to reconfigure certain areas to make the most of the space. The master bedroom has a small bathroom with a tiny stall shower. Next to this is a set of two closets (drawings show sliding doors, but they are actually double doors on each closet). There is a really nice and open space in front of the closet area which helps the room to feel bigger. What we'd like to do is take some of the space from the closet area and use it in the bathroom. I'm completely open to having the closet and bathroom more integrated. The idea in my head is to have a pocket door or some type of exterior "barn" door opening in to the closet/bath area and some sort of separation between the two areas. The closets would lose the doors/fronts completely. Our biggest wish-list item is a larger shower. Our style is very modern and we're going for a mid-century vibe. Any thoughts GREATLY appreciated!

Hi there
I have done a quick sketch of how you could encroach into your cupboard space, but it would mean moving your cupboard doors to sliding doors.
Basically, by just moving your vanity unit over a bit, you could extend your shower to a large one. For a sense of space, I would build a half wall behind your vanity (marked in red) and have a window going straight up - add two floating mirrors and you have a sense of space (you can add venetian blinds if you want privacy).

Well this is a thought . And I'm no plumber. There are many things to consider in a bathroom where your moving plumbing Are you willing to loose closet space? If so you could glass block up the window make that whole wall shower . Then move the vanity to the closet area next to the toilet. That would be the lowest budget way I could think of so your not moving the toilet. Also the cheapest for re routing the plumbing. This of course would be easy if there's a unfinished basement below the bath and it's a single story home etc. If that's the case you might be able to move everything swapping the bath area for a closet . With a centered door on the bedroom wall. The door barn door might be more of a costly thing for the hardware expense. The old pocket door might be able to be reused in the plan. If your a DYI person you could save $ by doing some of the work yourself. Like Tile work, Flooring, Painting etc. I would talk with a plumber to price only some different ideas 1st then get plans drawn up. Check with the city for permits. Plumbing & Electrical codes etc. I hate to even suggest things sometimes because someone will come along and say I'm wrong. lol I just enjoy the chat about decor and I'm not a bathroom expert. I'm a child of a builder. And a Decorator.

Thanks Kevin, all answers are appreciated! To clarify a bit, this is a pretty extensive remodel, so moving plumbing is not an issue. We are using a full scale contractor to do this project and several others around the house. I have no problem losing part of the closet. Also, what you don't see is the the wall in the bedroom to the right of the door backs onto another room. The door into the bedroom cannot move to the right at all.

I love that plan!!! It's simple and would be cost effective even if you just did a solid wall you could reuse the old pocket door so it would look original. It would be great and you wont lose any closet space either. They also have shower doors that swing both ways making it easy access each way.

Great suggestion! A while back I had actually thought of doing that same wall with about a foot or so open at the top (higher than a half wall, but same concept).
