I don't think white is too stark, even against your counter top, but there are 100s ranging from super white to off white.

If you are taking this on yourself, you will need to a bit of research on how to do it properly. Prep is going to be key. As in, you will need several coats of the right primer, sanding and caulking is also a must. I would suggest Zinsser BIN Shellac primer and Ben Moore Advance in either Swiss Coffee, Linen white, or crisp linen. To mix it up a bit, paint Island a different color. Not sure glazing is necessary.

Try paint samples first to make sure you like the color and it doesn't clash with your back splash. Another option is to just paint uppers and island the same color. I would also add knobs and pulls, and change out the light fixtures over the island.

Beautiful space. I agree with a little off-white. Plenty to choose from. This is a large area so make sure you hire someone who is specialized in cabinet refinishing. If the proper prep work isn't done, it won't matter how good the paint job is.

White (in whatever form you choose) will look wonderful...ESPECIALLY with a dark cabinet. You will have a light floor with lighter cabs and then a dark counter top. Very sophisticated. Much more sophisticated than what you have now. It will work very, very well. Go for it. Get the best professional you can in here. The space deserves a higher level of workmanship.

I like crisp white, sprayed professionally, no streaks. Unless you want to stay traditional, I would update the light fixtures with contemporary chrome or brushed nickel.
