Is this normal for bare roots?

I ordered 3 bare roots from Wayside Gardens: Molineux, James Galway and Queen of Sweden. The cane tops of the Molineux are turning black . One of the stems is breaking away like its rotting and one is broken on the JG. Is it normal to receive them like this?

No. However, they might be OK if you cut off ALL of the dead or black parts and plant them, of course after soaking the roots in water for several hours. Or, you can send these pictures to Wayside and then call them - perhaps they will replace the roses.

It always astounds me when folks on here get damaged or half dead roses which they have ordered from a company which is NOT A ROSE NURSERY. There are plenty of rose nurseries (read - they sell roses, nothing else) which would never every ship you plants in that condition.

This is my first time ordering with them and definitely the LAST time. I ordered thinking they were OWNroot rather than BAREroot. I don't know how that slipped past me. I've ordered from heirloom before and was very happy with my purchases.

I had heard of Dave's Garden but not Dave's Watchdog, so thank you. I just visited the site. I'm calling the company asap and hopefully they'll fix this. Im very new at this.

I got almost the same condition of my bareroots from Jackson & Perkins. That was my first rose order ever so I didn't take any pictures nothing... So far Only one that was all green and not damaged (broken) broke dormancy. I'm waiting on 2 more... They don't look too promising though... And 3 already died. I thought it was my "luck" to receive roses in such condition. Now even though they have sales and all I will never order from them again. Good luck, 123 456!

You should send these pictures to them. I bought 2 DA from them, but I didn't receive my order yet. Some people posted here some pictures of the bareroots they got from this company. Their bareroots look pretty healthy. That's why I ordered from them. Now, I'm concerned about my order!

I received 4 DAs so far from them about a week ago, they were all good sized and healthy. Ordered a few more today, will have to wait and see. There are only a few shipping days left, it's at the end of the season, so they won't be as good as earlier in the season. Those will grow for you, just cut off the black parts. I soak mine in the water over night, then plant them in the ground. I water them everyday. These are only $14 each, still cheaper than bands. :-)

I had the same issues ,cracked branches, bored cain, no root systems ,with the roses I ordered from J&P. Out of 15 only 2 survived. I reordered from Edmonds and they are doing ok.

Wayside owns Jackson and Perkins by the way. The nicest looking rose I now have is a BB I picked up from Lowes.

Nope, according to assorted bankruptcies, J&P bought Park Wayside, then went bankrupt and all three were bought by a "holding company". When J&P failed, their inability to pay Weeks took Weeks down with them

Weeks is now a part of Gardens Alive. J&P belongs still to a holding company and with them PW.

    Specifics on the bankruptcies

I sent the pictures to Wayside yesterday and they immediately issued a credit.

That's funny, though, about Lowe's. I have two Heirlooms I picked up for $3 along with some others and, imo, they are blooming beautifully.

It's pretty late in the season for bare roots and for Wayside those look like pretty good plants, lol! Just take off any dead or damaged canes, soak them and pot or plant them up. You might want to mound soil up the canes as high as you can to keep the canes as moist as possible. Like I said, it's late in the year and so bare roots have had a very long time to dry out.

I made the mistake of ordering from both Wayside and J & P when I was very very new at growing roses. The plants I received were of surprisingly low quality, especially considering what I paid for them. Even as a newbie, I knew there had to be a better option. I only order from a handful of nurseries I trust now, thanks to all the amazing advice I have received from this forum. I'm not sure where you are located, if you're on the west coast then you would have other options closer to you, but some of my favorites are: Roses Unlimited, Chamblee, Heirloom, & Antique Rose Emporium, & Rose Petals Nursery. I also recently found a few Kordes roses in 2 gallon containers at Lowes, in only "decent" condition, but they were large & actively growing so I bought Lavender Veranda & Dark Desires. At $20 for a 2 gallon own root, can deal with some black spots & some tangled up rose tables.

OK. I stand corrected. Thanks for the update Ann. I was in Hodges SC 3 weeks ago and Wayside and JP are still operational on the same compound there. Im not sure what they are doing though. Could be packing up.

Bare roots can be own root or grafted. Did you mean potted (meaning, already actively growing in soil)?

I meant both, lol. I thought they were own roots in pots. I realized days after the order I was getting bare roots. Upon receiving them I realized they are also grafted. I got caught up in my own excitement. I can't actually find the graft information on the website, either.

Grafted on Dr. Huey, more than likely, unless they are marked as "own root" on the web site.

I got my 2 DA today. I bought The poet's wife and molineux. You can see on the pictures they don't look that great. I know it's the end of the season. PW had mold on the roots (I removed) and one of the stems on the molineux is split in half and it has some mold on it . I hope they can make it.

I contacted Wayside Gardens regarding the 2 roses I got from them and they told me to mix 1/4 cup of Epson salt to 1 gallon of water and water the roses once a week for 3 weeks. They said this treatment with Epson salt should help them.

Have anyone used Epson salt on roses before? Do you think this treatment would be helpful?

That sounds like a bit excessive. One treatment might be better. I never heard of this on new plantings.

I never used Epson salt on my roses. Do you think it's safe to use on bare roots?

I have my doubts for new plantings, bare root or potted, I don't think I'd risk it.

Thank you Sheila! I skipped the Epson salt treatment. I hope the roses will survive.

Good luck to you Vane! I see they sent you a Molineaux, too. I have no idea if mine will survive either. Wayside didn't even bother with me, they just refunded without asking questions. They know they are sending out mostly trash. I cut all the black, and washed the mold off and see if they live. I thought I had gotten all the black off, but a couple of days later I saw another stem turning black. We'll see.
