Does the kitchen open onto the family room - will those floors connect? Is the family room color floor pretty much the same as the living/dining room?
Personally, I don't think you can have too many hardwood floors and I think it's fine to have them throughout including the kitchen. But if your family room floor is totally off from the dining room and living room floors that you'd be bringing through the foyer and kitchen, and the kitchen opens onto the family room, then maybe you would want to consider tile in the kitchen. OR you could do tile in the foyer and match your kitchen to the family room?
I know there have been posts on here where people do not want to put hardwoods next to eachother that are not exactly the same. Personally, that does not bother me as long as the colors are matched as best as possible.

The kitchen will have a step down into the family room, so yes, those floors will connect. Kitchen also connects to the dining room. All the wood floors will be stained the same color.

IMO it wouldn't be too much wood. you may want a colorful rug over the wood in the foyer. tile would be fine in the kitchen if you prefer the look to wood but it is hard and cold on the feet.

Agreed with tile is most practical in kitchens. Porcelanosa now makes some fabulous tiles that resemble hardwood (they fooled me ENTIRELY when I saw them installed) I think some of them look better than wood frankly. If you have trouble matching the colors of flooring yes it can look bad. So tile is the way to go.
