Covering a brick fireplace

We live in a Colonial Revival house built in 1923. Love everything about it except the fireplace. Its all brick, painted white. We are completely redecorating (natural hardwood floors, walls to be painted a pale griege, off white leather sectional couch, mahogany and dark wood accent tables, red and navy Heriz and Afghani wool rugs, red and navy Afghani accent pillows). I am really stuck on what to do with the fireplace. I'd like to encase it in a wood enclosure that looks like an original built-in but the cost is a little scary (I am hearing several thousand dollars to do that). . Any ideas greatly appreciated!

What is is specifically about the fireplace that you don't like? If looking at other options that might be less extensive,perhaps you could paint the fireplace a slightly darker greige than the new wall color so it tends to be differentiated, but not as prominent a feature. Perhaps a different facing on top of the existing fireplace brick, something like stone or tile.

It just seems like a big brick block. I like the look of other colonials I have seen but its so expensive and I don't have the skills to encase it myself.
Thought about painting. With the pale griege walls we are going with, what color would you paint it?

I think I would stay with the griege but go a shade darker. It would still define the fireplace as separate but I think with the fireplace in a similar shade, it would tend to blend into the entire wall more and not look as prominent in contrast.
