Mirrored Consoles

Lots of discussion about mirrors placed where you can see yourself dine.

What are your thoughts on looking at yourself while watching television?

I'm in the market for a media console, and mirror sure is trending...is this the foil ;) to that late-night ice cream?

I am starting to see these in Home Sense and when that happens I figure the trend is on the way out. So, don't buy them because they are a trend but because you really want one and it would suit you and your home.

I would agree they are a thing that was, not one that is coming. The HGTV crowd was pushing adding mirrors to door/end tables/cabinets BIG time about five years ago. But to answer gardener's question NO WAY do I want to ever have a mirror where I am eating/watching TV...on a sneak attack in my home. Maybe if I were Angelina Jolie?

If placing the mirrored console under the television I think that there might be too much light reflection to watch comfortably.

I think it would appear busy and distracting.

I think mirrored furniture has seen it's day but if I loved it I would add it anyway. I don't know that I've ever seen a piece that I would consider ordering for myself.

I love high end, well-done mirrored furniture. I've toyed with the idea of using a mirrored chest as a bedside table for a few years. Why haven't I pulled the trigger? My cleaning woman! She's a total klutz (no, I cannot find another - no one does daywork anymore and I don't like, nor can I afford a cleaning service). I know she will end up hitting it with the vacuum cleaner and breaking the mirror and it would be VERY difficult to replace. In a house with children, the fingerprints would drive anyone crazy as well.

I can't imagine using it for a TV stand - way too much light reflection.

I have a small chest/nightstand from my old mbr. It's been repurposed in my LR.

To me, a mirrored piece with a TV above it would look odd. Mirrored furniture is too elegant for the TV.

We have a mirrored nightstand/chest under the TV (wall hung, flat screen) in our MBR. It's a clean-lined, contemporary mirrored piece (which was needed in order to "work" with our circa 1986 contemporary bedroom furniture). I needed something with drawers (for storage) on which our TiVo, DVD player, and surge protector could sit (under the TV). I specifically wanted a mirrored piece. I like the look, and I felt it would balance the mirrored closet doors in our bedroom. Not too much light reflection at all, though I'm sure the equipment that sit on top of the piece, as well as having the TV up on the wall, help with that.

I do wipe off the top (dust) with a dry cloth every morning (takes less than a minute), and will spray with glass cleaner every so often (usually to clean off cat prints! lol).

I love mirrored furniture, and hope to have a console or night table one of these days. That second pic in the OP is making me swoon.

For a TV console, I think it just depends on other factors: lighting, size, what else is in the room, where it's placed, etc.

This was in a guest cabin we stayed in a few yrs ago, and the reflection wasn't bothersome to me, but the set-up is obviously a bit different than most (bigger) living rooms would be.

I think that works fine, MizGG. The first three mirrored pieces posted are very big and would have a very big TV over them, and ostensibly be a focal point. I am not sure if that would work in a LR, which for some reason I assumed this was?

Lol. Not an ice cream lover, so it could work for me! DD has mirrored furniture in the DR, but I feel the younger generation is more open to doing whatever seems a bit different. She found DR chairs that are iron in a bronze/goldish finish and are perfect with the mirrored table and buffet. The fabric on the chairs is a beige/ivory color, with an ivory area rug, and eggplant walls. It's very 'glam'. However, if you were to use a mirrored console carrying the glam thruout the room *would* be beautiful, but imo, the console doesn't need an 'accomplice'.

I've had the first console you posted for about 6 yrs. Saw it in a dining room by Sarah Richardson and had to have it. It is a beautiful piece the only complaint is that the wood (or whatever you call it) is soft and one of the hinges to a door comes out. It gets a lot of compliments. I like the storage. Here is what it looks like. I have a bird who seems to like to nibble on the top. I also have a great furniture repair guy.

jerseygirl! Thanks so much for posting, that looks so pretty in your dining room!

@Tib — I'm pretty sure that would be one key I wouldn't lose!

pattyV it's funny you should remark on the younger generation. I read someplace (maybe here?) that re-decorating keeps you young. That's my story and I'm sticking to it ;)
