Container Bed

last modified: 10 years ago

Due to issues with white rot looking rot of my garlic and verticillium wilt of my eggplants and okra, I was thinking of making two raised beds for these crops.

The only raised bed I made before was made right on top of the existing soil with no separation... and it performed fantastically.

As I am concerned about the disease issues the idea here it to have the bed act as a container that is isolated from the soil. It would need to be well draining however, especially for the garlic.

I am not sure how this is typically done. I was thinking about placing a layer of solid plastic, a sand layer with drain holes out of the sides of the container, then another layer of plastic with drain holes, then the soil.

Also, whats a good recipe to fill it, that is inexpensive? I don't have much money to spend here. Lonejack suggested I fill the garlic bed with 50% sand, which I actually think I already have. I will need to construct the box myself with whatever I can find that isn't too pricey. What's the current consensus on pressure treated lumber?
