We are in the planning and design stages of pondless waterfall & stream and we could really use some advice!

If possible, we would prefer to use a non-submersible pump located at grade behind the waterfall. The part we are currently confused about is how to deal with winterizing. If we place a check valve at the outlet of the basin, it will be somewhere around 8' underground and inaccessible. What are our other options? Do we have to dig down 8' and create some type of access to the check valve in order to drain the supply line before winter? Is there freeze-proof hose we could use? Would it be easier to create a reservoir for a submersible pump?
