Yes, my mom has painted over wallpaper, and it looks just great. Of course, the wallpaper was in perfect condition and had no problems with detaching. There are definite advantages to painting over the paper as opposed to ripping it off and starting fresh.

Rip it off and start fresh. Painted wallpaper usually always looks like painted wallpaper.

Bob Vila says 'don't' because you'd be introducing moisture, and making it harder to remove later.... would a glaze have much water idk.

The website referenced by Genevieve, above, recommends use of an oil-based paint over wallpaper. In that case, I don't think that moisture would be a problem.

My mother had AWFUL wallpaper from the late 70's that was beyond a bear to remove..she ended up painting it, and it looked great. Still does!

you introduce moisture every time you shower, or wash down the walls. i'd not worry.

Nice posts - when I saw Martha's re-do, I was impressed by the aged/ softened look: the pattern remained and some of the color.
