Good orchid growing is about trying this and that....."eventually the roots will grow through". Yes and if a phal. is happy there will be roots growing in all directions.

But give it a go and see what happens.

There are some orchids that might be suited to this method of culture, they are the ones that have a creeping growing habit and cover the ball.

No idea what is easy and what is difficult in the UK. Something like Dockrillia striolata and there are many others. Also, have no idea how difficult it is to obtain unusual orchids there.

Climate obviously has a lot to do with it. An avid buyer here cannot limit themselves to standard commercial retail outlets (equivalent of Walmart, et al....) but needs to locate specialist outlets or garden centres, and be able to afford them too... Otherwise, the majority of orchids available are Phals, both large and in miniature.... might be a good idea to start with a little one of those, and see how it works....

I tried that with Dendro.kingianum...the roots rotted attached to a tree fern. So,I tried with no moss...perfect.

That's a great idea for attaching broms to trees though. I wonder if cutting a cocofiber mat with some orchid soils and wrapping the whole thing like a stubby burrito would also work..either attached or sitting on its own?

That is kinda neat looking... What will it look like after several years?

If things go according to plan - IF - the holding medium will have roots going through it, but also plenty around it.... If.

I think we owe it to ourselves as avid gardeners, horticulturalists and devoted fans of all things green, to try any newly-found bright idea, that attracts us, at least once. It's how we learn and, if you will pardon the pun - it's how we 'grow'. It's an experiment, a venture into uncharted territories. A fun escapade which can only add to our font of knowledge, for which many here, I have noted, is already considerable. <3
