A Few Looking Good

last modified: 10 years ago

Generally, the garden does not look good. Plants stressed out from lack of moisture are showing more yellow leaves and leaf streak. Flowers are small. Pure and Simple, for example, has had 3-inch flowers. Many flowers are deformed after extreme temperature fluctuations for the past few months and in the past few days (from upper 40s to 95). I watered some this morning, but not the deep watering the garden needs.

Charming Charlie had a flower this morning, though not perfect.

Paradise Bar and Grill bloomed in a pot.

Works For Me bloomed at an estate where I put in daylilies, but some worker splashed whitewash or something on the plant.

The same garden had a perfect bloom of Ethel Buccola. The plants have really done well there; of course, it is virgin daylily ground and I gave the new plants TLC late last summer. Most of the plants are clump strength already.

I was greeted this morning by a radiant bloom of Early Shirley.

Marie Hooper Memorial has been smaller than normal, but its flowers were perfect this morning.

Designer Romance a few days ago. An old one.

Lava Flow had one perfect bloom. The very cold morning, it had a group; most did not open perfectly.

Clematis Jackmanii was at its peak on a day that Columbus tied the record high of 95 in 1933.

Paradise Bar and Grill has such rich colors! Is that a new one for you? The dark eye and edge on Works for Me is appealing, and Ehtel Buccola looks all dress up and ready for a party. The clematis is absolutely spectacular! I've never been able to keep one of those alive for very long.

Works For Me has performed very well in my garden. We need rain to bring the daylilies up to speed, however.

Beautiful picture of Paradise Bar and Grill! I just bought that from Hanson three weeks ago or so - I hope I get to see blooms on mine this year. The clematis is stunning.

I like the flowerr on Charming Charlie, & Ethel Buccola is indeed perfect. The clematis is what takes my breath away. I grow clematis, but it never blooms like that.

Paradise Bar and Grill was added later last year. The record high temperature comes a little over three weeks ago that we had the latest freezing temperature on record. Those ups and downs take a toll on plants, as does dryness.

Nancy, there are both Jackmanii and Jackmanii Superba plants on that trellis.

They may not all be up to your expectations, but they look lovely to me....my handful of daylilies are spent. Also educational for me to understand what effects weather may hold for me in the future.

You have something Mantis we never have this time of year: "A very cold morning". Your daylilies seem to adapt beautifully though. Like the color of Paradise Bar and Grill, and Ethel Buccola couldn't look better. The Clematis is just WOW.......Maryl

Nice blooms, Mantis! We could use some rain here also. Had a few days in the nineties, today low seventies and cloudy.

Might be fertilizer that caused the white stuff on the plant(s).

Pretty group of blooms! Ethel Buccola and Works For Me are my favorites. The clematis is gorgeous!

The white spots on the estate plant (just a few of them) are probably a pool chemical, as this bed is located right by the pool. I didn't choose the location, but thought it would get a lot of views. I do hope that the owner will be cautious, since some of the plants (not those pictured here) are quite expensive.

We had another night in the forties, with daytime high in the eighties. Bad daylily day.

AHA! I thought it was a chemical.
