Select the strongest new growth and tip prune back the others that are competing with it would be my guess as to what to do without a picture, either that or leave it alone for awhile.

Most Sciadopitys I see have lost their leader at some time from snow or ice.

most conifers do NOT have dormant buds.. which is what you were expecting to burst out ...

the most important thing to understand.. is tree time ... it will recover.. in athe nest few years ... you will not do anything this year.. there is no instant gratification with trees .. but in 5 to 10 years.. you wont even notice it .. can you wait that long ...

It's been my experience that Umbrella Pines develop multiple leaders after losing the initial one and it takes a long time for it to sort things out and have just one leader.

Thanks for the responses. I will post a photo. I live in Boston area. These trees do fine here. My friend has a couple around 12-15 feet tall and they look spectacular, so they grow well here.

Anyways, a few inches down from where it broke there are 2 branches doing great. I was thinking of cutting one of them all the way back and bending/securing the other so it will start to grow straight up and take the place of the original leader?? Was just a thought.

As for leaving it alone for awhile? I thought with it being mid June that I had let it alone for awhile, but maybe my idea of awhile is not nearly the same as a trees idea of awhile
