Big tree

I've never seen one anywhere near that big. Bald Cypress - yes. There's one at UNC Chapel Hill about that size and maybe a couple elsewhere I vaguely remember. (Longwood?)

Swamp cypress, Pond cypress, probably local common names depending on where you live.

Nice Tree! :-)

I saw a large, labeled pondcypress somewhere near the Smithsonian in DC once -- it actually looked rather sparse and unhealthy.

"it actually looked rather sparse and unhealthy."

They often do compared to bald cypress, for whatever reason. They apparently have a need for some baseline of soil quality and steady water table, whereas bald cypress accepts a poorer baseline. I'm reminded of the Glyptostrobus pensilis trees that look more or less uniformly awful at the National Arboretum. From that you might conclude they do poorly in the DC area. But then you see the one next to a creek at Brookside Gardens, in Wheaton, MD, a site definitely colder than the arboretum, looking superb.

Glyptostrobus pensilis has a moisture requirement of very wet to standing water up to 24" deep, with the standing water most recommended (from what I read).

Ben I'm sorry to hear about your pond cypress. Bill, I think it's actually somewhat more complex than that. The tree at Brookside is next to a creek, but on a sturdy rise of earth at least 6-8' above the water's edge...it's not getting prolonged innondation, ever. I suspect it's possible that moist soils vary in a bunch of other traits like oxygenation levels, and not every palustral tree is happy in every wet environment.

TSO says:

. In his garden near New Plymouth, New Zealand, Glyn Church has found the species grows well in wet and boggy ground but balks at inundation in standing water (G. Church pers. comm. 2023)

Back to both of mine, I can't wait to see my Chinese cypress turn red in a month, and my Pond Cypress turn bright orange!

PS - you can see a couple of the National Arboretum trees in this thread:

contrast with the Brookside tree:

The tufted appearance is very distinctive and I love it. They should cut down that sickly white pine next it, but they won't LOL.

I need to remember to post my sources along with my posts.

I'm not contesting anything and I know nothing about these trees, again, only what I read. 😉

Under 'Culture'.

No no, I'm sure we aren't contesting!

Just sharing another view on it.

And I just realized an irony - I posted this whole angle of 'they seem to need some kind of special soil environment with a magical moisture level', and yet here's a thread Ben started picture of a giant one not in a swamp, but a level road median! 🤣

Oh, but don't you think it might've been much bigger in a swamp. 🤣 J/K
