The naming of cats!

last modified: 10 years ago

A very important facet of cats.... When I was breeding Siamese, I followed the old tradition of naming kittens alphabetically.. ie the first litter all began with A and so on..

When I came to Ireland, with my last breeding stock offspring I had decided to put something back into the cat world. So much joy they had given me and I learned my first night in Ireland how bad the stray and feral situation is. I was kept awake by a hungry howling and next day guess who got my chicken stew!

When my last older cat was clearly near his end, I took in a litter of three from a refuge.. The lady said they were all females, two long haired, one short, so they became Amata, Beata and Cara... Sadly the feline enteritis they had brought from the refuge led to a heart defect in the short haired, so that was Amata gone.

Then , shall we say the inappropriate behaviour of one young cat to the other had me rushing them to the vets for "fixing" so Cara became Boycat..

Last year I took on two more. The yearling had never had a name. They called him Kitty. Gave him up when they were moving to a house with family where there was allergy.. My comedy cat, now called Jacob, or JJ..

Still havering re a fixed name for the little feral girl. She was all soft and friendly at first, until the mumsy hormones wore off.. I learned that the hard way when I held out some food to this gentle creature and out came the meanest and fastest left hook you ever got clawed by.. Then she hid under my bed to claw my ankles at every opportunity...

She had until then been Sweetpea so that was changed to Sweetbriar but no permanent name has yet stuck ,, NB she is gentler now...

That leaves the outdoor stray. I told someone I wanted something pretty to call him... There you are , she said.. Call him... Something pretty, so he became Sum Sum. He answers to the dog's name too...

That is mine named;; Over to you!

My big cat is named Bailey, he's the color of Bailey's Irish Cream. Bailey is an 18 lb. long-haired tiger, who fit in the palm of my hand when I adopted him as a kitten.

Mama was a stray or drop-off that lived in my barn for a while. For the longest time, I thought she was a he until I found her nursing 4 gorgeous long-haired kittens. I trapped all 5 of them, got them all fixed and then let Mama go back out to the barn. But, she didn't want to live in the barn any more and kept hanging around the back door. So one day I opened the door and told her that if she came in, she was never allowed outside again. In she came. She is still part feral ... put has a good life.

And then there is Mama's son who I named Figaro ... he is a long haired tuxedo cat (black & white) with a white mustache ... he stayed (I found home for the others) because he was so attached to Bailey. They sleep curled up around each other. Figaro is Bailey's shadow. He's also still a little feral, but friendlier than his Mama.

Fun topic - for a while I had a thing for classic cat names - either literary, or just sounding "cattish" in some way. So I had a Pyewacket (all black), Grimalikin (all silvery gray), and my old calico Kashka, which I thought was Russian for cat but then someone Russian told me it meant baby food.... which still fit, because her nickname was "Baby." Now Im on a kinda minimalist streak - my boy Orange is.... well, orange, of course.... and Im thking of the classic "Midnight" for a black cat.... although Katsura is a strong contender and would be fitting with the "catty" names I've always been so fond of.

The name certainly has to fit the cat though. Sometimes it takes a few tries.

Current Resident, are you the former "Kashka Cat"? :)

We have Pumpkin, named for obvious reasons. :) But we usually call him Punky, or Punkerdoo, or many other variations.

Then there is Lito, who is our puppy cat. He comes
when called, fetches, and listens. His name, which sort of evolved after
he decided to move in with us, fits him to a "T".

Numbers 3 and 4 are Mamacita (usually called Cita) and her daughter, Bugsy. Mamacita and Bugsy are former ferals we trapped at a Walmart back in 2001. Mamacita was around 2, so she is quite elderly now. Bugsy was about 5 months old and is getting elderly as well. It's difficult to take good photos of them because of their dark colors and shyness. Cita is a dark brown tiger striped tabby, and very small because of early mal-nourishment. Bugsy is a much larger tortoiseshell, with a tabby face.

Once upon a time, had 5lovely kitty's. My husband came with a dilute calico he picked up near a dumpster behind a bar, bars name Calico Jacks. Cat became CJ. I had a wht/blk spotted named Tounces the driving cat. Picked up from a student that needed to get did of a litter.SNL reference. And took in a tuxedo named Susie who was tossed out by previous owners. Then, ended up with a SILs cat- black named Mookie. And took in a little tuxedo male who was going to be dropped off at the pound. Named him Otis because he was so calm and the song Sitting by the dock of the bay came to me while staring into his green eyes.

All inside cats. Living the good life well into old age.All of them are gone now. But gosh did they give me love and memories. I'm now down to a new one- well , the newest, he is 10 already. Found by my MIL in her bushes in the backyard. The local cat rescue wasn't answering the phone on a holiday weekend so I kept him. Named him Tucker , coz it rhymes with......you know. He's a little P.I.T.A. Sometimes. Even tho they were all rescued, I like to think sometimes they rescued me too.

Petra, yes indeed, that was I - thx for remembering. Was so sad to have to retire my old girl's name but I was using it in other places, one where I was getting cyber-stalked-ughhhh.

What handsome boys you have- the 2nd pic in particular reminds me of those statues of Egyptian cat god- its that same long, lean, svelte type of cat and the pose is quite regal as well.

Oh I must acknowledge Rocket and his canine friend as well - looks like a true meeting of the minds there - what a pair- do they play together?

^^I could never forget Kashka Cat. :)

Yes, Lito is beautiful and it's too funny, when he walked in our backyard 9 years ago, calling for help (very thin and hungry and unkempt and ear-mite infested), my husband remarked how ugly he was and that we should feed him, but not take him in because we did not need another cat. I sweet-talked him into taking Lito in anyway and by various circumstances, after a few months of residing with us, he turned into husband's best buddy. He sleeps with him and dotes on him and has to be with him at all times. Who'd have thunk it. :)

I think pet names are so important. Our beardie, Tucker, was just like the car; one of a kind and forever gone. There will be no more Tuckers ;(

Our little Remy is well, such a Remy!

I like to name my cats with people names. I presently have a Timmy, Jimmy (brothers) and a Bob. I've had an Alfred and a Henry. But that doesn't always hold true. My Husband worked for Dupont and brought home 2 little kittens abandoned at the plant. We named them Teflon and Nylon.
