I have a pet door, but it opens into our dog run. It can be closed when I don't want them outside as well. The flap is vinyl , unlike this one it has a magnet on the bottom so that it closes after the dogs go through it.

I'm in a HOA and one of the CC&Rs prohibits permanent fences, we also have ducks, squirrels, the occasional raccoon, lizards and opossums every so often. A pet door with my dog and all those factors in play? Not possible.

We have a pet door only on our screen door. That way we can still lock the main door/sliding door without an issue. We bought a screen pet door installer on amazon for about $10 and installed it ourselves on our existing screen door. (Took about 15 minutes, was easy!)

I have one out onto the balcony outside my bedroom and a puppy potty on the balcony, so my old dog can go out in the middle of the night if she needs to without waking anyone up.

It is working pretty well, so we will probably put in a dog door when we replace the back door on the kitchen - that will go out into the fenced back yard and only be available when people are up and about during the day. I don't want the dog going out where there are rabbits and a groundhog and cats and I don't know what other critters without anyone to see or hear if there is a problem.

I never want a pet door! We have cats that stay indoors all of the time.

I had one in Santa Cruz for the rabbit, it let him go out to the fenced yard to play with the dogs & got rid of the litter box. I picked him up, pushed him out, went outside & reversed the process. That was all it took to get rid of the box.

I would use one from the screened porch to the yard, but not in and out of the house. We have a lot of wildlife in our neighborhood.

my kits ensure we have no wildlife, whether we want it or not.

Hahahaha, raccoons will invite themselves in even when they can hear the occupying dog forces inside. They're funny little trash bandits (as long as you don't encounter a mama with her babies, mamas are ferocious.)

i would say yeah sure, but i doubt you have sat there 24 hours. heard say, raccoons can be friendly with cats. both are very bright?

We have a pet door & could not live without it! It has a chip on it so only our dog can come & go out. He has a small clip on his collar that opens it. Nothing else can get in. It's amazing how others think they work...an opening for any critter...I think some of you are in the dark ages.

susan, perhaps some are a little more creative? to my way of thinking the cat leads the way and holds it open for the raccoon. there was a giant program on about cats and raccoons working together. perhaps mind is in dark ages?

Nah we live in a town outside of Seattle on the water. Have every critter there is but our dog does not hold the door for anything. We also lock it after dark. As I said I love it & would hate to live with out it. My best to you all.

having fun: please don't downplay everything positive which is being said about our experience with the respective options we are using. We are trying to give good advice and if our experience is positive - that is a good thing.

i protest, i have a pet door without a chip as stated above. i find difficulty in absolutes. i have never seen anyone except for an overly invited mouse or bird every so often. but i do not sit by my kitchen door. and i know my dog would tell me. but to say that we live in the dark ages, sounds a little archaic to me. I find my solutions and thoughts a little more creative than absolutes that can not be proven.

We have 1 cat and 1 dog in the house. Don't have a pet door.... But it would be handy! Lol!
So I would say YES to a pet door! Because I have to let our dog out every time she needs out and I get a little tired of letting her out because she likes out right after I sit down for dinner!

We have bears and coy-wolves in our area in NJ. So no way am I letting a pet run free and unattended even in our yard.

And I understand if you have critters you don't want to take your dog we had that thought. Don't want one now because we think she might get out when we don't want her to.

We kept litter box in garage with a pet down between house and garage. Kitty had to beg one her pet humans to let her out to patio to torment squirrels and birds. Kind miss her in and out game but have sworn off fuzzy friend funerals.

I have a pet door/flap for my cat, but he is not allowed outside, only on the decking which has a cat run then off there to the outdoors which is enclosed totally. No way would I allow a cat to be outside without making sure it couldn't be hurt or it killing the native wildlife. (I am in Australia and cats kill a huge amount of native birds etc. Grrrrr. I am a responsible pet owner and won't allow kitty to kill!)

mine really don't kill very much, they just sorta get over enthusiastic about their invitations, and most are mice. not that i like mice to be injured.....

So do y'all use pet doors for cats?

We have a number of cats that are indoor/outdoor cats. Having a cat door is helpful in keeping the litter boxes from being overused.
