Here are some BM colors. I would paint it all one color.

I like your cabinets, but everything else is too dark. Paint the walls a bright, light, warm shade of your favorite wall color, but don't try to match the cabinets. Keep the counters, if you must. Add under cabinet lighting and can lights. Stainless appliances would go better with your dark floor. White appliances might look too stark against the dark floor.

I entered a search in Houzz kitchen photos choosing shaker cupboards and black granite counters. This one has a similar floor tone and stainless appliances.

Consider adding a slim pantry and upper cupboards to your fridge, it will look less lonely. If you are painting the cupboards, you should be able to find a close match for new ones. The paint color appears to be a warm neutral that helps tie in the floor.

The 2nd photo shows similar cupboards that they did not paint. You could paint the walls, install a backsplash & new lighting. If you still want to go to the trouble of painting the cabinets, you could do so.

A couple of things in addition to painting; remove the cabinet above the sink allowing more visual space. If possible after removing cabinet add a period appropriate light. Remove the granite back splash replace with a white sub-way tile. Also, it is not clear if there is a vent above the range. I agree with other poster add a cabinet next to refrigerator even a narrow piece could hold brooms. If the floors are in good shape I would leave and use budget for new appliances in white with white walls the space will seem more open. A great BM white for the walls is distant grey.

Do you want to go neutral or add some colour? Will you be installing a backsplash? if you want to go neutral, one of my go to hues is Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter. The undertones allow it to work with many other colours. Behr's Wheat Bread is similar, but slightly brighter. If you wanted to add some colour, I'd pick a blue-grey.... Benjamin Moore's Sea Life? ...but may need to cut it by 25%. Hard to pick a colour without seeing in person. Benjamin Moore's Linen for trim. Better lighting, too.

Is that an opening to another room on the left of the open doorway? If so, what room is it. If you decide to keep the cabinets I would just change out the pulls/handles....that would update the look right away. I would add subway tile to the backsplash (off-white, biscuit something lighter than presently there with a deeper grout). Go all the way up to the upper cabinet behind the stove.

Paint walls a lighter color of choice. Also, I thing stainless appliances would look very nice in that kitchen. The refrigerator needs something surrounding it...maybe an upper cabinet.

The nice thing is, maple is much easier to paint than oak, so painting the cabinets should be do-able.

-I'd remove the cabinets above the window and stove.
-Install a stainless chimney style range hood
-Simple white subway tile backsplash with a medium grey grout, tiled to the ceiling above stove
-Paint cabinets a pale or medium grey (if you can send the doors to be professionally sprayed, that'd be ideal)
-Stainless appliances
- dark cabinet hardware
- wood look ceramic floors in a white oak look, maybe a hint of grey

I would do white!

The cabinets painted white will look amazing. Remove chair rail, paint the walls a light neutral- gray, taupe, blue/gray... It will be worth the effort!

Here's some pics of what I was thinking. White cabinets and black counters is also a classic combination that always looks fantastic.

Uh, the discussion has gotten pretty far from the original question, which had nothing to do with painting cabinets...

1) get rid of the wood band around the walls

2) pick one light color for all the walls -- some cream or cool tan seems like it would go best with the finishes and trim you have. this will be an immediate transformation.

3) don't rush to "tile over" your current floor -- that's going to make all your counters lower (because of raising the floors around them), and you could run into trouble in accessing/moving/operating any built-in appliances (which get trapped by the half-inch ledge of tile in front of them).

maybe a nice colorful rug in front of the sink, and then you'll probably put a table over on the wall with the mirror (which must go), and it will start to feel like a place you live rather than a foreign empty space. the flooring is at least neutral, although you have to keep its undertones in mind when picking other finishes.

Not sure why they wanted black counters and not at least an earthier color to go with amazing concrete. Is it easy to clean the floor?

if you really have to keep the cabinets, have them refinished professionally to white. The room is too dark

Thanks SO MUCH for all the feedback. I should also mention that this place is a rental (within walking distance of a major university) and I anticipate renting to university grad students/faculty/staff. They are a discerning bunch, but I do need to reign myself in, at least for now. ;-)

Yes, the fridge is currently in an awkward place, it is being moved to the LEFT of the door (door is to master bedroom, believe it or not!), to the "mirrored" wall (mirror removed this morning). New outlet makes this move possible. A couple of you mentioned framing in the fridge. I agree, but not sure it's in budget to add cabinets unless I can somehow repurpose the one over the sink? Otherwise, I was going to put some sort of cabinet/console to the left of the fridge for more storage and an landing for the fridge.

The "chair rail" will be gone.

As much as I hate microwave hoods, it does save space, so the plan is to install one in the empty space above stove as there needs to be some cooking ventilation (by code).

As for the cabinets, yes I agree paint them white. Then maybe the granite won't look so dark. I would like to be rid of the granite, but...

Change out of cabinet hardware might be doable. Right now they have the stainless steel "rod" style that are too contemporary.

Long and short of it, I would like to be able to just start from scratch, but that's not practical. So hence my reaching out for ideas to work with what I got.

There is room in the budget for new appliances. If the plan is to eventually paint the cabinets white, then white appliances or stick with SS?

The floor is a stained concrete which is very easy to clean, but always looks dirty, probably because of its stain color. Also, we want to rip out all the carpet in the adjoining room (not in picture) and it would be hard to match underlying concrete with stained concrete, hence the idea to install wood look tile.

I see this thread went a bit off topic as far as what to paint the walls...LOL! So far the consensus is for white as well?
