I would evaluate adding a custom decorative tile design on top of the existing tile.

Too much going on there already. Either get rid of the stone and add your splash, or leave it alone.

I can see it, Suzy. Yes, the last few days many photos I posted have been white. If I press edit, then submit without doing anything, they reappear.

I think the wall is a little plain, the tile appears to be a different color than the stone, and the area is somewhat shadowed/dark so I think adding a decorative design that you like, that includes some light colors, and that is consistent with that area and the rest of the kitchen would both reflect light and create interest.

A single piece (or very large pieces) of marble/granite that matched the countertop would look best. It'd be lighter than what is there and not add more pattern - there's a lot of pattern with the stone.

A large handpainted decorative platter would help

Something I would love to hang if my kitchen....vintage, discoloration would match colors of stones if you find the right piece (website below has many diff colors and sizes). I think it would be stunning but muted.

I'm just curious if there's any kind of venting system there that will deal with broiling issues? There doesn't seem to be much area for ventilation. I agree that the area is pretty busy as it is...a bright orange tea kettle would seal the deal for me.
