Lasagna Method - how long before...?

Quick question, how long before I can plant a partial shade to shed bed after I applied newspaper and mulch tot he area to kill struggling lawn? Search online seems to suggest a full season (like start in spring and plant in fall). In your experience, how long before the grass is dead and I can actually plant in there?

I would think you could just slide the mulch to the side at each planting hole... tear a hole through the paper and remove any sod you still see.... and drop your plant in (maybe having to add some soil to make up for the sod removal). I have no patience, but waiting a whole season seems excessive to me. Any grass that fights it's way back up will be easy enough to pull.
