I'd be more worried about the vines lifting shingles on your roof or pulling siding down. Wisteria are extremely large vines capable of much damage to a house....

Yes, that is a concern too, but at least it's much easier to prune the vine (away from the house) above ground than underground!

I decided to plant it away from the house, but did bury a 30 gallon trash can with some holes in the bottom.

After 20+ years our wisteria have never damaged anything underground. Vines will pop up in a wider area than originally planted but overall, keeping the underground part under control hasn't been a problem.

I am curious to hear how things work out. It seems like the wisteria would end up breaking out of any container soon enough but I've never tried that.

How did planting that wisteria in a 30 gallon underground trash can work out? I very recently planted Kentucky wisteria and am considerably worried about the roots sending shoots into neighbor's yards. I am strongly considering replanting it in a large underground pot (or trash can), but I'm not sure how large it should be, or if this might stunt its growth, or if it will break out of the container and make the effort worthless. So far it's been a bit difficult to find specific information on this. Did yours turn out all right? I would really appreciate hearing your experience!
