Has it been uncharacteristically sunny? Your plants, which seem to be well adapted to your special climate, might not react well to a sudden bright sun heat shock.

Your plant looks perfect but stressed. There is clearly no disease, and they are a nice shade of green. It is not too hot. What is left? Crowding? Not that. There is only two left I can think of:. Too much moisture around the roots, or a critter has messed with the roots. Got any critters? The fact that it is one or two plants (are the plants neighbors, I can't tell from photo) kind of points to something is messing with those plants only.

Thanks Janice. Those are the things that I suspect. We have mole that crawl in the ground looking for grubs and worms but they don't eat the plant root.

I would think if a mole is crawling around under your tomato, if he disturbed the roots enough, it could possibly wilt a bit like that.

And sometimes if you have moles you also have voles. The voles like to use the tunnels of the moles. They will eat at the roots. I know, unfortunately we have both. They can drive a gardener crazy!

Just a thought...hope you figure it out.

Voles are evil. I hope you don't have voles.

I doubt about voles but moles are there.

Tomorrow I will make an attempt to check by careful soil removal starting a distance away from the stem.

Gorbbelly, yes, the Willamettes look the some : Rolled end/top growth with no change either way. In the same bed I have also Siletz, Oregon Spring,. They are not affected and are very healthy.

It is strange that the leaves actually wilt to the point of getting dark and the actually falling off the plant! That is some serious stress. Tell us what you find as far as voles and moles. and grubs.

I have a Black Krim plant this year that has leaf role and all its neighbors are fine. It seems some other growers report leaf role is more common with the BK. I am not familiar with the Williamette. Do you have more than one?

A Mr Stripey, that is a neighbor to the BK, has now extended itself into four neighboring cages. I have never seen a happier plant. The BK is still not that happy, won't grow or bloom. I really like the BK, hope to have better luck with different plants next year.

Today I am going to do some excavation to see what is down below. I will let you know of the result.

Janice, BK is prone to leaf rolling. I had the same experience with it in '13.

But my Willamettes were fine last year as I remember.

I have 2 of them and I will check and see if both of them have the problem.

I am trying to let the beds get a bit dry , after several weeks of cool, cloudy and rainy weather.

Update:

I did exactly what I said in above post: Removed some of the soil around the plant. I did not find a tunnel or whatever. But when I pushed the soil it went down, as if it had some air in it.

Then I flooded the hole to get any air out . Then put soil back. The plant looked ok, as it was cloudy and not very hot .

On the Willamette, Only one of the two plants has that leaf rolling. And they are growing side by side. No change in status. Seemed like the newer growth is getting better. Also out of several stems only 2 of them have that problem. .

As long as the problem does not spread, I am not worried. Two out of 45 plants w/problem , is not that bad. I can live with that.

We shall see what happens next.
