The living room and kitchen flow together in the back of the house that gets eastern exposure. I want to make it feel very airy and open everything up. We have already started to prime and painted the ceilings white. We plan to put down wood but are unsure of the direction horizontal when walking in the front door or vertical. The front dining room by the door is already silver sage but we don't want the rest of the house to be the same color. Any suggestions on making a nice inviting flow?

Hi....I'd be placing the length of the boards at right angles to the front door i.e vertical when entering the front door.

I would suggest against mixing so many different flooring choices in your rooms, you could end up with an overall look of a flooring store... You need to pick colors that will work best with your furnishings, taupe, grey or even a soft gold or green can be used as neutrals. Having an eastern exposure will give you morning light but none in the afternoon or evenings, I generally suggest warmer tones in that case.

When a house has an open floor plan you need to stick with the same color throughout. I would do a creamy white and bring the color in with the furnishing ,carpet and art. What's going on now in the LR and foyer is ghastly

I like the diagonal floor suggestion. Floors also help to visually expand or contract the space. If the area is long and narrow place them horizontally to visually make the space bigger otherwise the area will look like a "bowling alley". Similarly, if you want to create depth, place them vertically. As for colour - you don't have to paint it the same colour throughout. However, you have to pick colours that seamlessly flow into each other and your wall placement will tell you where to stop. This could be one colour with different intensities or complimentary or adjacent.

I am in agreement with colors that work together in an open floor plan ...greys/beige's, taupes in different levels ...Mixing brights/bold in open floor plans can end up looking choppy. You already have silver sage..u could get the color swatch..go up or down on it..Or change to a different color.

This is correct! These open floor plans have to flow. If you are a colorista--use it in the enclosed rooms --bedrooms

You also need good lighting in the kitchen. Right now you seem to have one big fixture on the island, It is not working, you could add more down lights and under cabinet lighting. That will brighten up the kitchen.

Great suggestions! Thank you! IThe diagonal wood idea is really cool, but Ibdont think I would be brave enough for that. I am thinking vertically as first suggestion, so when turning in to the adjacent rooms it will be horizontal.. Diane I could not have described the pre existing paint better! Yes it's ghastly lolIm attaching a couple colors we put on the walls to test in this weird lighting house. The first is sw repose gray and second is pavilion beige. The beige is horrible and too much like the mustard color that was already there. We are thinking sticking with the gray family or maybe even cream or white.. This is tough, what do you guys think?

From what I can see, the grey seems to look fine.

Thanks my husband really likes that one. I think the light is dictating no beige or warm tones. The repose gray looks earthy too. I like that about it.
