Something that doesn't shine in your eyes, nor provide such harsh drama that a guest checking her makeup will think something has gone terribly wrong. Contemporary lighting can be handsome but often tends toward the latter. Try looking in a different realms, like pendant lights, or even clip-on lights meant to go over old-master oil-paintings.
