I wouldn't do the mural or decorative element behind the cook top. rather, Id just do something simple throughout and go all the way up to ceiling in the area behind range hood. Depend on color of rest of house I guess. White and gray subway tile always looks good. Carrara marble always looks good and very high end. Go to a local tile shop and see what you like that is reasonable. Id stay away from glass mosaics.

I would do something simple in a light color. No marble, especially behind the stove.

I see a tiffany shade and a pair of country cow & rooster bowls (and maybe some Inuit art?) so I'm getting an eclectic vibe from you, which can be a cool way to personalize and add soul to this otherwise modern space. I'd want a good look at that light fixture before making a recommendation, because I'm guessing it's the focal point that needs to be considered most, with the rest of your installations playing supporting roles. Have a photo of it?

Aha -- love that! That makes quite a statement and a world of difference in directing your choices. Let me see what might work...

Click to enlarge...I'd tie in with a rug -- even though you'll keep your dry cleaner busy with it -- your light needs a relevant partner to play with. Then I'd go with white for a clean backdrop, with distant second and third choices being indigo tile or maple veneer (or wallpaper, seen above.) Strictly adhering to the light's generous and lively palette will make the marriage of looks cohesive. Fun!

If you are faithful to the rainbow of hues in your light fixture, then no, the indigo won't clash with your red items in this setting. Make sure you keep a photo with you for purchases. I'm glad you like the splash of blue for accessories, but I do think that a white backsplash will help all of your colorful items to be the stars here. And tile as much of the wall as you can afford to, since with the tall vent hood, it makes sense to take it to the ceiling. And I'm not opposed to a carefully selected accent tile just under the hood -- cement, Mexican or Jerusalem tile perhaps. Something timeless and not '90's, and keeping to the light's coloring.

Since your countertops and cabinets are super simple, a tile with a design or pattern would look GREAT! Cle Tile has some options that would look amazing. I would carry the tile all the way up to the ceiling behind your hood, but by the window I would make it even with the edge of the cabinet.

I would bring in a kitchen designer to help you. The number one post on Houzz is from people who hate their backsplashes. Good luck!

Sorry, I have to mention this. Your kitchen is perfect. If you feel you must add additional backsplash then the four inch counter splash should be removed. Having both is not a professional look. In a lesser kitchen I could overlook it but yours is just too high end look to have it. I'm not a professional, this is my humble opinion. I don't know why the pros are keeping silent on this. Love your kitchen.

Emmarene, I don't know if the 4" bksplash can be removed w/ out damaging the wall! The adhesive is also glued to a portion of my cabinetry. Not sure how easy it is to remove.

Yeah emmarene, I was biting my tongue about that since it's already in place. It does busy up the prospects of tilework. But since it's there already, all the more reason to go with a plain white backdrop for everything else, maybe with an accent square with a white relief tile under the hood.

And raynegirl, the blue was a distant option #2 to the white rather than an accent tile.

I'm really excited for you about this space because of the juxtaposition you're thoughtfully incorporating that will make it unique. Curious about the light -- is there a backstory?

I agree that a white tile would look the best. Go to the ceiling around the hood and around the window. If the tile covers all the wall space the counter top matching strip will be less of an issue, your eye will be drawn to the larger tile wall. I really like the arabesque tiles groveraxle pictured or anything that has some curved lines to echo the curves in you light fixture, but just as a textural element - nothing to fight with the fixture.
