A Big Blank Wall!

I am in the middle of redecorating my living room. No renovations, just design. I painted the walls bright white (LOVE!) and I got a new rug, throw pillows and blanket, and floor lamp. I also created a small art gallery on my floating shelves: family photos and art prints. Now I am stuck. I have a huge wall (approx. 9.5 feet wide) where there is a sitting area with two chairs. Any suggestions on how I should decorate that wall? I do not want a shelving unit. Would more framed art be too much? I hope the pictures help convey what the space looks/feels like. I'd call it modern/bohemian. I have also included pics of the other side of the room (couch). I am open to all suggestions/critiques. Thanks in advance!

One piece. You have a lot going on the adjacent wall.

Have you tried moving your furniture off the walls by a foot?

Blue Booby. I have not tried that.

What is your thinking behind moving the chairs? I'm intrigued. Also you said I have a lot going on on the adjacent wall. Do you think I should break up the frames by adding some potted plants and/or other decorative items? Or just a lot going on to add another gallery wall? Your help is much appreciated :)

It will give that wall interest by moving the chairs more into the room. Even try them angled toward each other somewhat. Your eye will tell you when it is right. Add some large books to the coffee table & change the flowers to a large bowl with string balls in it.

I would also add some accessories (not many) to the low credenza. Do add a large piece of art above the chairs. Not too high & should be about 3/4 the width of the two chairs, I think. Again, your eye will let you know what is right. You have done such an excellent job so far.

    Hello

I like what you've done so far.

I would do a large and interesting mirror on the 9' wall and put a sconce on each side.

    Best of luck !

The big chunky dense dark coffee table is too much. It might be too tall, too. The room would open up with a glass or lucite.

    The little rug isn't right.

The big rug needs to have more color and pattern. NOw it's just like the tile : (

Love the black and white patterned chair.

The black and white rug totally distracts, doesn't fit and is not useful in that location.

A large pic with color or sunburst mirror would be nice. Would look more inviting if curved chairs toward each other just a little and a taller lamp that you could sit there and read.
Add couple things on table and on shelves with pics.

Move the shelves down at least a foot or 18 inches.

Try a taller lamp on the table with the two chairs and pull them into the room with their front feet on the rug.

If you had a lucite table then the small rug could go under it.

I agree about moving the chairs in a bit. Play around with various arrangements. People often push all the furniture against the walls, thinking it will make the room look more spacious. All it does is make it look like someone's hosting a square dance!

I think someone answered your question about art size. Just as well cuz these spec-related details are not my forte!

Is that an orange and cream patterned rug rolled up and hidden under the floating cabinets? Also, I agree with the others about art for the space.

Everything you have is great. I would add just one piece of art over the chairs because you have a lot of pieces on the adjacent wall, it is fine. You may want to look at something black and white to play off the other chair and rug, you actually could hang the little black and white rug if you want. Or go for some color to warm up that side of the room. I would not place anything on the console....I like it simple. Your coffee table does need a bit more styling. Maybe just a few big books with something low on top. If you want plants, a large low planter with succulents would be kind of cool on your coffee table. Only get what you love. Try moving the furniture in a bit, I think when you do you'll see what we mean and love it.

I think if you did a collage on that wall it would have to be an actual cohesive collage, what you have now are individuals placed together. here are some actual collage ideas

Love your room. Here are some things you might try?

Put the patterned chair on the wall at an angle where the pair of chairs are now. Put a martini table next to it in a metal for spakle.

Lower the shelves so that the center of you eye is set at 65 inches on the wall. Put shelves equidistance from that point, and try lining them up and centered on the wall space between end wall and TV. Add a pair of colorful shiny lamps in a strong accent color taken from the print chair; yellow, blue, green, white, what ever you find that is a bright color found in the chair. Place the pair of white chairs on a diagonal opposite each other where the print chair was and the other one on the other end of the L on the sectional. I think you could add end tables but not sure from pictures. Agree that youneed lighter cocktail table something round to soften all the angles.

Hang art work above print chair in something you like; maybe graphic large leaves, etc. Something eyecatching and bright! Pull pillow colors from the print to place on the pair of white chairs......you room is great, nice proportions but too safe......you can try the lamps martini table and pillows for some jazz and if you do not like it then just return them......also I would add two or three frames in an accent color; same colors but from light to dark....you do not want things to match except the pair of lamps and the pair of chairs and a pair of pillows.

Simple burlap or white/cream curtains would soften the room too.

When hanging your large art have the center at 60-65 inches or the bottom of the pictureprint 5-9 inches above the chair back.

The rug is too small and the art shelves are too high. The table between the chairs needs a taller lamp. You could find a textured vari-coloured wallpaper to create a feature wall.

Wow! Everybody's suggestions are so amazing!

Blue Booby, I'm all about your comments. I agree with everything you said and what a great idea to hang the black and white rug above the chairs! I was thinking a textile would look good there, maybe a dhurrie print or something along those liens so that rug may do the trick. And totally agree my coffee table needs more styling. Question: I am about to get an accent wall in my dining room painted Whispering Peach by Benjamin Moore. Do you think that will work in my house? It's a great room so kitchen/living/dining are all open and connected. Thinking white, sheer curtains and a distressed black and white ikat rug. Thoughts?

Thanks havingfun! I love wall collages and think those are great! I did a more cohesive one in my entry way. All white frames with my husband's bird photographs in them. I love it!

dkorzelius: yes, that is an orange and creme rug rolled up and waiting to find its forever home. Not in my home LOL! (rug we previously had)

blenheimnewzealand: Any idea where I can find that gold mirror that's hanging above the bench in the first photo you posted?

kjbjw: yes, I am thinking a nice textile would look good too. Or a mirror.

Snug the shelves closer to the credenza instead of to the ceiling. Decor on the top one is higher than your door or window frames, so they must come down a lot. I think I'd prefer the boho colors of the orange rug to the bland one you are using. It is too small for the room and does not anchor the seating. A larger rug, centered in the room, with the seating anchored on it will change the dynamic of the space. I once had your coffee table in the 80's but mine was teak. Sell it on Craigs List and use the $$ for a new one.

Katherine Sharp, I think you're right about stacking the frames. Just need to get a lot more of them first LOL!!!

Some people suggested a taller lamp on the table between the white chairs. I agree. The one that's there right now is not really supposed to be there. Does anyone have a recommendation for a great, taller lamp? I do love to read there!

One or two larger pieces of artwork would go well over that wall, and because of the size, would give a sense of "rest" from all the smaller works to the right -- you probably do not, as you observe, want to duplicate the array of smaller works on another wall. In light of your neutral tones and modern feel, I have appended Stolen Kiss and A Perfect Day in Venice, with my constant encouragement that modern decor does not have to limit itself to abstract, and that representational art, with all its color, form, and feeling, is a great way to add personalization to a space.

A Perfect Day in Venice and Stolen Kiss are available as originals through Houzz, and a variety of representational art as prints is available on my page at Prints.com -- http://bit.ly/298u61q

Hi, michelle, you asked me to drop by, but I have to admit I only skimmed the thread. You have a lot of good suggestions. I agree that a single piece on that wall will have the most impact. You can never have too much art, so I would recommend art or a cool textile or artifact--a large one--for that space.

A couple more notes: the chairs and table there now look squished in the corner. They need to come off the wall, maybe angled a bit to face the sectional.

I'd like to see the whole wall with the shelves because I think the shelves need to move not just down, but to the right a bit. They should form a composition with the TV.

Groveraxle: Thanks for stopping by! I wonder what a textile would look like in that space. Something with a bohemian/tribal/dhurrie feel. And you're suggesting vertical? I was thinking horizontal (???) That's exactly why I need help LOL! Any other suggestions for the rest of my room? Someone mentioned that it felt too safe. I totally agree. It's not totally complete, but looking to really fill the space with warmth, texture, and personality. You are awesome!

@ Groveraxel so I think they are probably shown 48x48 because the wall is probably 8-10' but yes I actually could print them the size of billboards. I paint digitally and I can scale them with enough pixels because of the way I paint them :) I don't list the larger size but i have had people email me for larger sizes.
