Chalk painted kitchen cabinets

Does anyone have chalk painted kitchen cabinets? As mentioned in a previous thread, my cabinets need one more coat of paint and I was considering chalk paint for ease of application. Is it too trendy? Get dirty too easily? Can you scrub it?

Do you ever post in the Home Dec forum? There were some dicussions about chalk paint a few years ago, but I've never used it, and don't recall much. There are some threads in this link: Chalk paint/Home Dec

Thank you! I have only posted here, and a couple times in paint.

Chalk paint is not anywhere close to being durable enough for cabinets. Painting cabinets is a lot of WORK. There are no shortcuts.

Chalk paint is not a durable finish, no way would I use it for kitchen cabinets. If you are looking to paint your cabinets, forget the "ease of application" , as live wire oak said, its a LOT of work. Surface prep being the key, and that is a very tedious job but will determine how well your paint adheres. Those that say, well, you don't need to sand, or prime if you use a particular paint are just incorrect IMO. If you are going to tackle a DIY cabinet painting, take the time to do it right, good prep, good brushes, good primer and paint. This is not to discourage you, you CAN do a good job as long as you understand what it takes to do it right.

Furniture is a different animal than a kitchen cabinet. The kitchen gets hard use, more so than a dresser or nightstand. You need to be able to scrub the cabinets from time to time and chalk paint simply isn't going to give you that. Maybe with a polyurethane top coat, but wax alone? I wouldn't. There are better paints for a cabinet paint job than chalk paint. Benjamin Moore makes a few that are very good.

Of course furniture and kitchen cabinets are different. There are different brands of chalk paint. Don't pick one up from Home Depot though. Annie Sloan stockicts can give you tips if you decide to do them. It isn't cheap though. A qt of paint is around $40, and the brushes are around $30 to $50 each.

What paint is on your cabs currently? If it's chipping or peeling you'll have to sand down anyway. I hate using chalk paint on pieces that were poorly painted with latex.

Well, why pay $40 for a quart of paint when there are other paints that can do the job for less $ and better? If you want the look of chalk paint, then the extra cost might be worth it to you. And as in buying any paint, get a good quality paint. Many chalk paint users have recommended Annie Sloan's chalk paint. If you are adults, with no kids in the house, who don't cook much, chalk paint might work out okay. But if you use that kitchen, have kids and cook a lot, there are more durable paints. Smm5525 is right though, a lot depends on what is on your cabinets now. They must be very clean, sometimes there is a thin film of grease around the stove cabinets that you can't see, so be sure to scrub them well. I am a believer in sanding, regardless. It always helps to have a surface the primer/paint can "grab" on to and sanding well will do that for you. Prep work is not fun, but crucial to a good result.
