Hi Lauren, I'm curious on why you'd rather have mango seeds instead of a grafted mango tree? Much better quality fruit at half the fruiting wait time!

Believe it or not I bought the LAST mango tree at Home Depot which is a Manila. I can't seem to find any plants anywhere... and I consider myself a resourceful person! Nobody is even selling mangoes at the farmer's markets for me to get a fresh seed around here. Crazy but I really want a few. They are soooo YUMMY! I just ate 2!

Aww. Yes, we are very lucky to live here- for gardening and also to raise a family. We are not Hawaiian by blood, but we've been here since our oldest was four years old (she's 14 now and we also have a 10 year old son). Well, I was reading about growing mango trees in your area and many growers say that their trees suffer from frost during the winter. Maybe you should consider a container mango that you can bring indoors (or at least the garage) for the winter? From what I've read about container mangos, many people love the "pickering" mango because they bear a lot of fruit for such a small tree. Plant-o-gram currently has Pickering mango trees available for sale and they ship to CA. I have to admit.. I was looking at one of these for myself too! However, they don't ship to Hawaii. I already have one in-ground mango tree, but I don't have room for another one in my backyard, so if I buy another, it has to be a container tree. Honestly, if I were you, I would not waste time on growing a mango tree from seed. You should consider looking into a grafted container mango! Sorry, I don't mean to sound pushy.. but I am anxious on your behalf to get fruit, ha ha.

Before you do anything drastic, check Craigslist or other classifieds in your area. Type Mango Tree in the search field. You might be surprised. I found a commercial nursery that sells to the public on certain days. It was worth the one hour drive. I got my Manila mango from them 3 years ago. $10.00!!

Yeah growing from seed for fruit takes a LONG time to fruit, and the taste can be pretty bad compared to the parent. Relying on luck that you get a goid fruit is not worth the time.

Growing from seed makes sense if you are going to graft but for fruit? No.

There are nurseries that ship. I think top tropicals will send you what you need in a grafted tree
