More Akebia woes

Early this spring, my landscapers planted a line of 20 Akebia (and 20 Honeysuckle) along a fence. All Honeysuckle are going well, but some Akebia are doing better than others. Now I have three problems, all focused on the upper half-to-third of the plant (the bottom half or more have nice full green leaves, as seen in the second and third photo): leaf curl/drying, brown spots (no visible insects under leaves), and dying vine tips. I've attached 3 photos. I am sure they are getting enough water; I've checked. Could it be too much water? Most of these are in the sun all day, and the "rootballs" were like 2-3 inches square, so they dry out in a day, so I've been watering every day. Adding more water, or using less water, does not seem to change the look of the leaves or help the vine tips, and this has been happening for over a month now (it may be accelerating).
