I might try a pale greyish blue. A much darker colour will only highlight the grey colour.

I think that might work. If you combine two slightly different grey tones it will look like you are just working with an overall grey palette. To make that work though I think you should paint the oak vanity a white colour, it's not terribly hard to do and I think you will really like the end result.
