It is always best to paint a large sample on drywall or on the house itself and live with it for a few days prior to making a final selection. Please do this to avoid hating your next selection. Good luck with your project and I hope it comes out to your liking.

Before I had my house and detached garage painted in April, I spent a lot of time online deciding what colors to go with. Once I made my choice, I purchased samples of each color and my husband and I painted good sized sections on the house. I looked at these for a couple of weeks in full sun and shade to make sure they were the colors I wanted since we paid over $3,000. to have our house painted! I'm so glad we did and we do love our newly painted house.

We had a huge house out in the country and wanted to paint exterior. I spent weeks obsession what colour, then I started driving around seeing what colour looked good. Found a house with the perfect colour and nicely went into the owners and asked them what they had used, they were great and very informative. Got the paint and yes it was perfect, so happy I did that, it is so hard to tell from painting patches, you really need to see it in a big volumn, the way it plays with different light etc.

What color is the roof?

I happen to really like the 'blue'. It goes well with your roof. It is the yellow door and door moulding that needs changing. Navy blue? Also, your front landscaping needs updating/ fixing and the correct bushes and grasses would do wonders for your beautiful home.

Actually all your trim needs to be a darker colour.

The roof color is a medium light gray. It may have a slight green undertone. Yes the landscaping definetely needs updating. We have finished renovating the inside of the house, now doing the outside and then at some point we need to re do the landscaping. The door will painted charcoal gray or black.

Agree with all these thoughts. The single color is what bothers me. I prefer a couple of grey tones. A darker grey on the element that is front porch? That would create more interest, and take away a certain boxiness. The blue I don't think is best choice. Doesn't seem consistent with style. Perhaps selecting greys with blue undertones might work. But keep looking until you hit it spot on.

Then punch up front door with color that works well with grey tone. Black is an option and would work with the greys, but I think a color like a deep violet (purple) would be dark but interesting. Of course, there is always blue-reds, bright yellows. Then on to the landscaping. I think before I painted, I would pull out all the old plant material and clean up, so you prevent the new paint from getting messed up with landscaping debris. Then in your landscaping, make sure you have clumps of purples and white flowering plant material to tie everything together. Thanks for bring back a great house to even better than new status! Maybe do the front entry area in Dove White or white to match window trim, etc, then the body in a medium to dark grey such as BM Country Life or BM Cob Stone Wall, then the front door in BM Mountain Ridge 1456, which is a deep violet/purple. Yum! The picture you like has three tones. White trim, body of house deeper gray and garage doors, deep gray. Just need a little more life to that front door.

Are any of those colors BM sea gull gray?

No I don't have seagull gray. Emmarene, it does look like that in the picture but in reality I think it's close to the bottom left color in picture 4. The color on the right is lighter.

Here is another picture today. The roof color is more clear.

Personally, I really like the "blue". (Is that just the first coat?) One more coat will change it.

Paint the front door crabby apple red, suggested by SW as a coordinate.

I thought your first photo looked quite blue, but this one looks much more gray. In either case, the house looks pretty great. Good luck.

Just to give you a visual of two tone grey approach, here is a picture that shows two greys. Notice the little pop out at the top left side. You have a small one too which could get a lighter paint color, then the garage is the darker color, in your case that could be the entry area. You can reverse the dark and light depending on the look you want. The garage door here, IMO doesn't help this house. I still think you could do something a bit more interesting with your front door, by the previous red suggested, has enough blue in it that it would work with a nice gray. The gray/blues are very tricky to work with so don't feel bad. One tip is to ask about the colors in the tints in the paint. That will clue you to what the undertones will be. For example, if there is red, or a form of red, you can expect the undertones to go pinkish, maybe even lavender. If the tint is black, you will get the "clearest" gray. Lavender is the most predominate and that should be avoided for your home again IMO. You have some really good input her, and a wonderful home, so keep trying. If there is a home you have seen that has the color you are after, go to the door and ask them if they know what the color is and try it. People have asked me, and I am happy to give it to them, (if they aren't next door, lol) and it is a compliment. That is a sure way to get close to what is in your mind. If you do go with a blue color, make sure there is some black in it. That will help keep it from looking "baby blue" The color would be more "wedgewood" in appearance. Have a look around Houzz. Search for "two toned gray exteriors" and see what comes up. Lots of choices and looks. Keep to the "era" of the home and you can't go wrong.

JudyG, it has had 2 coats and still looks super light. It looks nothing like the sample! I tried the red door with a different color called silver plate. Looks pretty nice.

So true. The color in the middle is colonial gray from their color sampler and on the right is how it actually came out!!!

That would bring out more of the character of your home.
