I don't know. However, I have the Sunset National Garden Book that is a well known authority. They indicate that it will grow here but that it is problematic and would need good (not described) placement.

Not sure what holly characteristics you seek as their "Englishness", but our neighbor has several well growing tree-sized hollies with large, multi-spined leaves that appear to us to have at least a predominant component of Ilex aquifolium genes, and for all intents and purposes represent to us "English hollies", although their racial purity is uncertain. Many hollies in the nursery trade are hybrids. For instance the popular 'Nellie R. Stevens' is a hybrid between I. aquifolium and I. cornuta, resulting in more shrubby appearance and smaller leaves than I. aquifolium (the opposite for I. cornuta). So we are dealing more with a continuum of types, rather than very discrete varieties. Consequently, little could be gained by choosing absolutely pure I. aquifolium, especially if they were problematic in the Southern climate, as Chas045 indicates.
