The roof appears in the photo to be to be a reddish brown and is very prominent which makes the home visually top heavy. I think grayish brown would clash with the roof. I would suggest painting only the garage door (but not the light gold between the garage and the roof) in the roof color to provide some lower balance. Also, as nice as the left tree is on its own, I would suggest removing it so it isn't only the roof and garage that are visible and then add a lot of landscaping to draw the eye downward.

Well, I would NEVER suggest removing a tree, unless it was sick or splitting apart. Trimming it might be in order, but that's it.

Which parts of the house are you actually thinking of painting/changing color? The roof? The garage door? The windows and door? Anything else?

I guess I wonder what the brick face would look like after a power wash....Then you could re-roof and choose a color to paint the trimming that matches the new roof. I am going to make three color suggestions for this concept: 1.) a dark Slate Blue on both the roof and the trim (by this I mean the Garage door and the windows and door of the house). 2.) burgundy or other dark red. 3.) deep Forest Green.

This way, you are choosing the same color scheme for both the new roofing AND the new paint--so the house overall has two basic colors: the ochre of the bricks and the other color that you pick.

I think trimming the tree would be a viable option if the tree wasn't as large and close to the home. Large trees that close to a home create design issues and, more importantly, structural risks in my opinion.

Agree with raising the canopy on the front tree so you can see the whole house. Darker trim in the brown family. I think a new modern garage door would have the most impact. A pop of color on the front door and modern style plants. Remove the ones from the walkway so you can see it. This will help make the front door the focal point.

Consult a professional arborist to inquire about raising the canopy on the tree. Don't try it yourself, don't have a buddy do it no matter what they say. You'll be amazed at the difference. I like Nancy's idea of a more contemporary garage and front door. Keep the contemporary theme going. The roof colour is a huge factor in your colour choices. If it was my house, I'd probably play it safe and color match the darkest colour in your brick to paint the garage door and it's surrounding trim to keep it low key. When your budget allows, get a new garage door and plan what your roof choice will be when it needs to be replaced in the future. Buy two tall modern planters to flank the garage door in the meantime.
