I was told years ago (or read it somewhere) that Pels dont like wet leaves. But I can't see that being true considering they are commonly used as bedding plants in a country with a high rainfall!

Curled leaves could be heat stress maybe? Too high humidity (that they don't like!)

Though the summer is dry, the air is very humid that close to the sea. The A/C condensation provides most to virtually all the water supply in summer. They are mostly planted in containers. The #1 reason being easier access to pruning. The second reason, is filling the gaps between trees: Direct planting between the trees makes caring for the tree much harder as you have little room to step inside for pruning, picking the fruit and laying the compost/manure.

Containers are allowed to dry before next watering.
