General kitchen layout feedback

last modified: 10 years ago

Hey! My house plans are being drawn at the moment and I need to start thinking about appliance positions. But before I get into that, It would be nice to know if the kitchen layout is a good design. Any suggestions before the point of no return?

Just to better understand your home... You're planning a media room, a game room, a music room and an office, but no dining room? The angle bay nook look too small and disproportionate for a house this size, so will the music room or office flex as dining space? If so, that will impact the kitchen plan a bit.

You'll need to have fridge and range on the same side of one of the long
counters, or the island will be a barrier. You could have separate
cooking and clean-up aisles, with the range and hood as a focal point
    from the family room:

This plan puts the fridge at the furthest point from the dining area, but next to the pantry, and near the point at which groceries enter. ETA, is that a void for an appliance beside the entry? You could put the ovens, and a pantry pull-out in that space, or have a wine cooler and glasses. Ovens:

A 48" built in fridge is supposed to go in the area across from the pantry, that's the only appliance that I know for sure.

And correct there isn't a formal dining room, there is a dining nook for perhaps a round table of 4 or 6, or whatever I can fit there without overlapping to much into the walkway. And then there is the the counter ledge with seating for 4. That's all I need, but if needed you could use the office as a dining or use the top 1/3 of the music room and put a huge table there.

I would get rid of those angles; they just create wasted and awkward space. Also, corner pantries are huge but not so good on storage space. What if you made an L shaped kitchen with island and the peninsula for a cleanup sink and seating?

I'd rather see the fridge on the same side as the cooktop/range, with the pantry on the right. You can make the counters shorter to add space to the dining nook and walkway between the rooms. Also, the family room entrance can be centered between the bookcases:

I kind of like the angle just because of the entrance into the family room, how about perhaps adding a door to where the fridge is supposed to go and call it a reach-in pantry. Then you could delete the original pantry and have the fridge there along with the other cooking appliance along that same wall.

    kind of like this:

That's better, but I meant to delete the family room angle too.

My only concern about deleting the family room angle is strictly because the entrance into the family room would then be a 90 degree turn from a narrow hallway.

I think that works well, especially if you like the angle. Even when I click on the plan in your last post, it's so small I can't tell what you added. Other than 48" fridge, what appliances do you want in the kitchen?
