Good news--If you're in New England it's probably a different kind of moth, since most gypsy moths are just finishing the caterpillar phase right now and won't become moths for a few more weeks. Plus, the adult (flying) moths don't eat anything; it's just the caterpillars.

I am just outside of Boston and I was pulling Gypsy moth caterpillars by the handful off my trees over 2 months ago. I am 99.9% sure these are gypsy moths. I have been dealing with them for almost 20 years both at home and at work. Where there are moths there will be eggs/caterpillars eventually.

Oh, sorry to hear that. I've only had a few in my yard and have been going by a news report from Plymouth/south shore today that said they are just pupating now and won't become moths for a few weeks. Perhaps there are different population cycles in the area.

JD is right; the gypsy moths are in full effect in southeastern New England. It's a plague in my backyard to the point where thoughts of moths permeate my daily activities. Thoughts like: Where are they now? Are they about to fly into my mouth and my house? How long can I keep this flashlight on before a hummingbird-sized beast moth slams into my forehead?

A certified arborist told me that the low rainfall amounts over the past 2 springs have prevented a particular type of fungus from thriving. The fungus is good because it kills moths/caterpillars, or at least, severely limits their reproductive capabilities. The Hartford Courant had a front page story about this in its Friday July 1 edition.

Oh, and before the current moth plague in my community, these pr**ks sawed through leaves in almost all of my trees. Several big old trees in my yard look like they shed leaves for winter. Sickening. Puke. Moth sandwich.
