How to tell if paint is oil based

10 years ago

My house was built in 1950. I am finally getting around to painting the trim. The original trim color was apparently light blue, as that is what is showing through the later white paint. I really just need to know how to prep before repainting, and I am hoping I do not need to strip it down to bare wood first.
