Hoya pubicalyx varieties

Hello ok I'm confused. I've seen Hoya pubicalyx black dragon, white dragon and pink dragon on eBay. Are these just different names for different varieties??

Yes, they are different names for different cultivars of Pubicalyx. Each has slightly different foliage and bloom characteristics.

    For example:

H Pubicalyx cv. Royal Hawaiian Purple

    H Pubicalyx cv. Red Buttons

    H Pubicalyx cv. Black Dragon

    H Pubicalyx cv. Pink Dragon

    H Pubicalyx cv. Bright One

    H Pubicalyx cv. Pink Silver

To my knowledge those are the only official varieties besides some hybrids that may be floating around...

White Dragon I recently learned has been renamed Hoya "Celata" and is not affiliated with Pubicalyx anymore. Idk why some eBay sellers like to keep old or incorrect names.

There is also pubicalyx cv. Jungle Garden, cv. Silver Sheen, sp. HSI-037 (thought to be the original pubicalyx), and a few others.

I knew I was forgetting some! Pretty sad considering I own HSI 037 LOL. I'm curious as to what to others there are.. they must be pretty rare/rarely offered.

I really do live all the Pubicalyx varieties as well as the Carnosas. So far, those are ones I don't seem to be able to kill. lol

    Oh, also cv. Philippine black

Pubicalyx cultivars according to Christine Burton:

‘Bright One’ (Bright blue-red corolla with rose coloured corona - differs from cv. Pink
    Silver in colour of corona).

‘Dapple Gray’ (I place this here though I’m not certain it belongs. Ms. Andrews who
distributed it, labeled a pink flowered carnosa with this name in the picture book she
rented me but all the flowers I’ve seen so labeled have been purple.

‘Fresno Beauty’ (Kloppenburg named this for his home town).

‘Grey Lady’ (I’m unfamiliar with this cultivar - I suspect it’s from England - the way gray is spelled is what gave me that notion).

‘Jungle Garden’ (From a California grower. Little different from cv. Pink Silver).

‘Jungle Green’ (No such as far as I know - I suspect that someone just couldn’t think of Jungle Garden and started calling it Jungle Green - lot of that going around)!

‘Leenie’ (named by Dr. James Broton for his wife, Eileen).

‘Pink Silver’ (the best of the best - a Hummel creation).

‘Pretty One’ (????. I question this because I once rented Ms. Loyce Andrews Hoya
Photo Album. She showed this as a pink flowered Hoya carnosa look alike. The one she sold me had pink flowers too, however, everyone else I ever heard of who got a ‘Pretty One’ from her got a plant with ‘Pink Silver’ look-alike flowers with broadly ovate leaves.

    ‘Red Buttons’

‘Red Buttons Seedling’ (unnamed Miyashiro seedling).

‘Reva’ (Kloppenburg named this for his mother).

‘Royal Hawaiian Purple’ (often sold mislabeled as Hoya pubicalyx var. chimera and as
    cv. Chimera).

‘Silver Leaf’ (similar to ‘Pink Silver’ but with rounded leaf bases and not as much silver speckling).

‘Silver Knight’ ( Seen by me only on a wholesaler’s price list " turned out to be cv. Pink Silver).

‘Silver Prince’ (This turned up on the same wholesaler’s list the year after Silver Knight - turned out to be the same plant wholesaler even admitted to the truth).

That is one gorgeous Pubicalyx. Did you get it from Jan? Or a Thai vendor?

I got that one from Susan, she was offering 4 cuttings and I regret only getting one. But I'll just keep taking little cuttings from this one until I have a beautiful overflowing pot of silver :)

That pubicalyx royal Hawaiian Purple super splash is gorgeous. I love the leaves and that is definitely on my list if I can find it. Is the red on the leaves natural or from high light? Who did you get it from?

The red on the leaves is natural! And yes it comes through more in high light situations. I got this from Susan in Florida I believe.

Klnco444. Is susan a hobbyist in florida or is she a seller? That pubicalyx splash is amazing. Id love to contact her to buy a cutting.

Yes, me too! My super-splashy 'PS' is my favorite, but that one rivals it!

Thanks aurorawa! Funny, i just ordered a few cuttings from her last month. Ill ask her. Thanks. Now to research if its a seperate variety or an unusually heavy variegated part of one of the known publicalyxs.

Ironic. I just contacted her and she was just about to list 4 on ebay so i nabbed one. If anyones looking, there are 3 more available :)))

And they are rooted plants how beautiful! I think I will order one. Thanks richard for letting us know!

A big reason I'm so obsessed with this clone of Susan's is because it's actually a Royal Hawaiian Purple Splash which I have a hard time finding, let alone this splashy!

    Is Susan beastlyflower?

That was FAST....let's hope they live up to their hype :-) Glad you got yours!

Thanks for the tip richardiraha12! I wouldn't have known they were available otherwise....

I just noticed. The picture used to depict black dragon is my picture from years back. I thought it was royal hawaiian purple.

    Thank you Karen

That's funny how they used your pic, Lydia ...and then named it something else. I think there are so many hybrids and different Pubicalyx with such similar flowers that no one knows for sure on some of them. That color isn't stable either...can be affected by location, fertilizer, and weather so you can't go by that.

The little H. pubicalyx Super Splash cutting that I got from Susan a couple months ago. I love how those new leaves are so red. It is growing under lights so maybe that's why.

I also love the look of that "pink dragon's flower, and that is one I don't have. Think I will be getting that one too in the spring.

I want it too! Its gorgeous!

I have a super splash from Susan too. Repotted it in fine orchid mix, and it didn't miss a beat! I think everyone should have one.

Just wanted to share this pic. Look how red the leaves are. This is red buttons.

that weird thing on top is a ceropegia

I was wondering what that weird thing was! lol

    Yeah looks kinda gross lol

Hi i am new here, just glad to see most of the variations in H pubicalyx listed here. I wonder why the old maroon pubicalyx is not included, i thought that is the old main reference for pubicalyx. I am from the Philippines and i have another 2 variations which are different from those you already posted. I have 1 with whose flowers are pinkish with slight visible stripes/striations along the corolla, the leaves are like the 'BlackDragon' and H celata (purely light green without specks). I guess it is not named yet or maybe i just don't know. I also have the 2nd with roundish leaves and long internodes, but the flowers are chimeric almost like RHP but bigger umbels. I will post here the photos (but am not sure if i can as am not familiar with posting here yet), thanks.

Those are the photos of the pink with stripes i am telling you, but the colors are just light variations due to environmental factors and camera light.

Those 2 represent that chimera flowers but with bigger umbels than the RHP, roundish fully green leaves without specks.

Today I got a Hoya pubicalyx 'speckled'. The leaves are a lot bigger than my H. carnosa.

Does anyone have a picture of its flowers?

    Thanks!

I was told Hoya Pubicalyx 'black boy' is the same as 'chimera' and 'Royal Hawaiian purple', is that true?????
