What home improvements would you do on a staycation?

10 years ago

So many people plan expensive, extravagant vacations but what if you saved the vacation money and stayed home and put that money into home improvements? What would you do?

Instead of planning a big, expensive vacation, my husband and I spent our money on professionals to paint our exterior and a landscaper to create new, extensive flower beds for better curb appeal.

    Thanks tooky58 and Jennifer! A very smart way of paying off your bills Jennifer!

    @Bev

    I hate carrying a balance on credit cards over several billing cycles, after all the heavy emphasis my parents put on telling me that the responsible thing is to pay it off in full each month, which went on for years and I still get periodic reminders during phone calls as though they think I could ever forget! I'd rather keep on top of things financially than take a vacation someplace at this point in my life. I'll vacation when I retire. ;)

    That makes a lot of sense! It's why whenever my husband and I do improvements that we do them ourselves. It's much easier because we can take our time buying what we need, in cash, and have everything ready for when my husband and I have time to do the improvements. Over the past several months, we have been slowly buying things we need to improve the kitchen. We already have purchased bowling lane wood to make our counter tops out of (we are avid bowlers), and I have several tile backsplash samples. Luckily, I was able to get most of these for free since none of them look as good in person as they did on websites!

    Who wants to be inside when the weather is nice. I'd be out playing with the plants.

    Those of us who hate heat and humidity and have other health problems when spending time outside!

    Those of us making a serious effort to protect their skin from the sun and heat! My mom has been a frequent visitor at the dermatologist's office to have suspicious spots and such removed, some turning out to be melanomas, the docs attribute it to her getting a few really bad sunburns when she was younger. I grew up with her liberally applying sunblock on me (more like encased me in it) and staying out of the sun as much as possible has gotten to be a habit for me.

    I picked landscaping as your home is seen by everyone walking, driving by. Curb appeal has a lot of likes if people are looking to buy in the area. Painting and landscaping is number 1. Bev your place there looks great! If you have been on great vacations before now would be the time in life to enjoy where you reside. If went on that extravagant vacation your home would not look like that!!

    Thanks Ken! We have not been on an expensive vacation since we went to Hawaii in 2001! I have been to several states and cities for bowling tournaments but we spent less than a thousand dollars. My husband and I did go visit our daughter in Virginia during my granddaughter's Spring break from school in March but again, that was not expensive but necessary for us to see them.
