Keep the roof shingle as neutral gray as possible and don't go too light. A greige/gray roof with no blue undertones will give you way more flexibility with paint colors. If possible hold off on the shingle till you nail down your color selection. Start an idea book with exterior colors you find on Houzz - and make note of the shingle color also. PS: don't forget to prune back or remove overgrown shrubs and trees away from the foundation and roof.

While I find the house quite charming with the red trim, the red does not go well with the steps which are an orange/clay color. If the yellow paint is in good condition, you could just repaint the red parts with a sage green for a new look. The roof would be very neutral in a dark grayish brown.

this was the listing photo. we already trimmed the heck out of the front yard and put up a picket style fence. I will update the photo. I do not care for the color of the house as it is now. And it needs to be repainted. We have picked out a pewter gray color for the roof. It needs to be replaced before the rain season starts. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Mary B., cute house. Is there a porch railing covered by the siding between the columns? Even if there isn't and you could remove the siding and put in a railing it would open the front of the home more. not sure about what is under the siding on front porch. we have many things to discover about this house. we know it has the "good bones." Most of this home is redwood. I just hope all our discoveries are not expensive!

Another question for any old house experts. We have removed some 1930-40's paneling in our living room to see what was underneath. We found a couple of other things, one being another layer of masonite and then wallpaper and then.... some 6" boards going horizontal (shiplap?) made of redwood or douglas fir. They are gorgeous. I have never seen this in a house before. We thought we would find stucco, and or lath. The entire house seems to be built of this. The question is what to do with it? It is dark and has lots of nails and there is a small space in between each board. Any suggestions?
