Open pollinated doesn't mean the seeds they produce will stay true. They
will if no one else is around. But since tomatoes self pollinate, it
takes some effort to get cross pollination. Rodney's FAQ is exactly
right. They will *probably* stay true even if someone else is around, but
might not. Bagging blossoms will ensure that they stay true.

Most people don't worry about it because the incidence of cross pollination is pretty low. Some people save seeds from the earliest fruit, because they claim that the bees and other pollinators were not around very much when those fruits were in flower-mode.

If it's important to you that you are sure that your plants will not be crosses, bag your blossoms. If you plan to share seed with someone who really wants true seed for a variety, bag your blossoms.

Otherwise, lots of people welcome the rare cross, because it can produce some interesting new surprises in the garden.

Like Linda said , there is normally a small chance of cross pollination. But plants growing side by side might have a bigger chance of crossing.

To assure seeds purity, you can bag one truss of each until the pollination is done. Than tag those trusses and save seeds from those tomatoes.
