I think you should sand it down and stain it a dark color. We did this with my rental in Indiana, a stucco as well.

You could also go with white. While it is a pain to paint the front door it is cheap and you can also repaint.....

But if not white,I like the idea of eggplant.

Something like In the Navy would be a nice compliment to stucco and since that color has some green undertones it would help highlight greenery in front yard. Clean that up first so dirt and dust doesn't mess up newly painted door. It would be even better to replace the door with one that would let some light into your home. Do that when budget allows. Not sure current door is worth painting.

Hmm... congrats on the new house! I would go for a high gloss lime green door as I think the burgundy and navy are too dark and would fade in the hot sun. Look how nice the green foliage contrasts with the house colour! Make it look like you meant it with accent pots, outdoor furniture cushions in the same colour intensity. Some spiky grasses either in pots or the existing garden beds would complement the current plantings. Bigger bolder house numbers and an upgraded the porch light are inexpensive fixes as well. Not sure what the thing on the wall is by the house numbers or the statue? on the porch, but you can do better!

I would do a blue. After all you are in Long Beach. Maybe a teal

Wow, thanks for all of the feedback!! I did some mockups and Navy (maybe a little lighter) and Eggplant are the winners.. not what I was expecting at all! I think they would complement the sagey color of the xeriscape in the front yard (once trimmed and neat, of course). Burgundy didn't work due to the red hue of the landscape trim.... Interesting stuff. Appreciate your ideas!!

The door, agreed looks rather weathered and definitely not the original door for a house of this age.
I would go to the city library and see if the have an historical dept. ask if there are orig picture of the house so you can perhaps find a door that is comparable to the original look of the house.
There are architectural salvage door places in SOCAL, restoring an close to original door would enhance the veil airy of your new home. There's one on Sepulveda Blvd in culver city. From there, the salvage place is likely to have a recommendation for someone to install the salvaged architectural period door to your lovely home.

Sherwin-Williams has an app which you can upload a picture of the house and then select colors you're interested in painting and experiment digitally the best color combo for the door and the exterior walls.
