Looks like your warm gold tone sofa is in contradiction with the deep cool color of the walls and in the rug. Slipcover it with something cooler - maybe a powdery blue - and put that same color on the back walls of the built-ins. Re-style the shelves with 1/3 books, 1/3 decor items and 1/3 open space. I think you have too much going on there and no open space for the eye to rest. Even this Billy bookcase from IKEA is too crowded, but look how pretty the blue is on the back. Then look for a great piece of art for above the FP.

Agree with above poster. I love your color scheme-- the dark gray looks wonderful against the white. I agree, too, about something circular, to offset the rectangular and square lines of the bookcases and fireplace itself. But I really love your room here. Just take your time and find something wonderful to go up there. I would have said a circular mirror, but since you already have a mirror on the opposite wall-- some circular imagery-- possibly abstract(?). Maybe a print (mezzotint or lithograph)-- which are usually more affordable than paintings (and often more visually interesting as well-- more unusual, to my mind).

Also agree with decoenthusiaste-- paint the back walls of the bookcase, either a contrasting color-- or some deep gray color. A contrasting color would add a lot of visual interest.

Love your room, I think painting the back of the bookcase a lighter version of what is above fireplace would look nice.

A nice, abstract piece of colorful art to be a focus piece and to draw attention to that great area with the fireplace and shelves. Great room so far, but I agree that it feels like something is missing above the fireplace :)

I think an art piece of your liking would be perfect.

Love this room, and your red accents. Paint the mantel and sides of the fireplace red, but leave the squares and rectangle areas white for now. You may want to keep them white or paint them red after your other room elements are complete. Paint the top of the fireplace the color of the molding. Paint the edges of the bookcases red like the mantel, start with vertical, then experiment with horizontal to see if you like that, too.

Change the curtains to a circular or big floral pattern in red, the dark wall color and another color you can pull from the perfect art for above the fireplace -- perhaps a blue like your pillows. Keep the sheer curtains. Use any large art that you fall in love with! Put red accents in the bookcase of vase, storage box, ceramic animal like an elephant. Use white, rectangular smallish lamps on both ends of the mantel and trim the lamp shades with red around the top and bottom on the shade. If enough light, add living plants on the mantel or somewhere else in the room --- every room needs plants to greet you.

Place a long, textured, narrow rectangular metal stand, that complements your glass and metal table, in front of the fireplace and fill with textured branches, hydrangea, etc. going 1/2 way up the height of the fireplace hearth. Your glass table looks like it has sharp corners -- round corners are less dangerous for kids and adults. Or you could put a metal bench with a seat covering and throw complimenting your other colors for cozy seating.

Hard to see what is along the wall opposite the couch, but pull in to create a more friendly conversation area in relation to the couch. If both seating uses the table, put them in easy of the table.

Keep the blue pillows, replace the print ones with something better suited to your eventual art.

I got a little carried away here, but you have such a nice space!!

HI- Find a beautiful wallpaper and have that above the firplace and in the back of the shelves. Replace some of the shelves with tempered glass and then edit what is on the shelves . I would make the center shelves the glass and even leave some shelves off . Or remove all the shelves and the replace with full width glass shelves.The TV on the left could be one shelf down with one shelf over and then the rest bare which you can hang a picture in. Same for the other side. With the little side shelves you could try one item per shelf and have multibles of the same item . What you have now is a little too cluttered . Then find a big round decorative platter or something interesting that you like , over the fireplace and that's all . Black or antiqued mirror would also be interesting instead of the wall paper .If you look for the wall paper , look for a paper that has scheen or a bit of glitter to it, for depth. You could fill your front window wall with more full drapes -wall to wall and full length . Don't puddle the drapes, should clear the floor by 1/2 inch. That would give the room a nice finished look.

You have a beautiful living room. I like what lisapay8 had to say. I also think a pair of wall sconce light fixtures framing a piece of art would look fantastic above your mantel. Finish it off with a few objects tastefully placed on your mantel, and your good to go!

I am biased but original art brings life and warmth to a room. There are so many options but this painting would be beautiful over the mantel in either a gold, black or wood frame.

lose half the smalls on the shelves. it's just too crowded with no clear place to attract the eye.
consider having a carpenter add doors to the lower shelves.

try something very simple and sculptural over the mantle for visual relief. try a pretty tree branch hung at an angle. OR 1 large high impact super simple piece. did you see the thread in the last couple days about the tiny cottage? the gal had a wonderfully oversized woodcut bird over the FP. you may not like the bird, but the simplicity of it along with the rustic feel to contradict the marble would be great.

it's a very pretty room. have fun tweaking it.

DIAspoton also makes a good point about a sculptural piece. Even a lovely vase (glass or pottery), with nothing but tall stems of curly willow would be nice. Big colorful pieces of pottery-- variations on the same color-- as a grouping-- would be appealing, too. It's a really nice room. I love the bookshelves on either side of the fireplace, and I don't actually find them cluttered looking. But maybe that's just in comparison to my own. ;)
