Are the trim and spindles the same as the cabinets? I think it might look better than what you have as long as you update by removing wallpaper border and adding more lighting.

The rest of the kitchen is going to be updated. I'm just focusing on the flooring and the cabinets now. I'm not stuck on keeping the oak cabinets the same color; I just don't know what to do with them besides paint which I don't want to do. I'd rather stain them darker maybe? They are all in great condition so I would like to keep them but change them somehow. I know that the paint, countertop/backsplash, and window treatment will need to be light to prevent it from looking like a cave.

Be sure to look at RoseAbbey's link. There needs to be a contrast between the floor and cabinets, but still with compatible undertones.

I'd add upper glass inserts, light fixtures, maybe recessed and under counter, remove the border, open up the blinds, and gel stain with General Finishes Java.

If it's in the budget, I'd add lighter counters and new cabinet hardware.

Each element will be pretty but collectively it will be very dark. Is that your intention?

What about painting the cabinets? That should add a nice contrast to the dark floors and lighten everything up.

I would re-face the cabinets using factory painted doors and fronts and paint the frames. An painting only the frame wouldn't be bad at all. Just prep it well. Is there a specific reason you don't want to paint the cabinets? Too much wood can look and feel very heavy.

Is the full extent of your kitchen nine cabinets? Would you not be willing to put in an Ikea kitchen and get more drawers? I'd go nuts with two small drawers and digging through base cabinets for stuff. A new counter probably commits you to that for another ten years.

Thank your for the mock-up roarah; it helped to visualize the flooring in the room. I'm pretty set on the flooring; I just love the color and can't seem to get away from it. The set of cabinets on the window side of the room are original to the house and quite old. The other ones on the opposite side of the room are new and in great condition - just golden oak in color. I gravitate to wood so I ruled painting out. I really think my only alternative is to stain the cabinets a darker color like in the photos nosoccermom posted or to just move!!! LOL At this point, I'm planning on installing the flooring and dealing with the impossible cabinet issue later (because my head hurts every time I think about it!) So...stained cabinets, glass inserts, and mahogany flooring. Maybe the decorating fairy will have mercy on me and it will all come together!!! The darker cabinets all seem to have white countertops. Do you like the white at counter level?

practigal - white countertops really don't appeal to me but I am willing to go with a light tone. I'm going to have to go out and look around to see what my options are. I could also just reface the old cabinets to look like the newer ones on the other side of the kitchen. I'd still have the medium oak look but with glass inserts and they would contrast with the floor. Did I mention moving????!!!!!! LOL

If your going to start trying for an updated look....those cabinets will need updating. Your opening a can of worms...that border print and light fixture...it all has to go...

I don't know that I'd add inserts because I think it could visually chop up the look more. Where all were you thinking of adding them?

I'd gel stain the cabinets. (General Finishes brand) I think the Java color would work well in this case. I'd change that light and add more lighting. I also think a lighter counter would go be best here for some needed contrast.

I'd remove the wallpaper and paint (not dark). What is the backsplash?

I'd consider adding crown moulding to the top of the cabinets.

I'd add hardware.

You didn't say or ask about this, but if that laminate is Pergo (even their top of the line)...just say no. That or buy a crap load so you have extra when they decide to discontinue it (we had this happen more than once) and can't find it anywhere else on the planet.

I honestly like the flooring you have.

If you are handy, you could also add some top molding to the cabinets.

Thanks for all your comments! I've really been stewing about this project. The entire kitchen needs a re-do and believe me they are on the list for change! I just need to narrow down the cabinet issue; it's what is keeping me up at night! LOL The flooring, Sheeisback, is by Shaw although Pergo did have the color I love so thanks for the warning. I think staining is my best choice with or without glass inserts. So my plan is to have the flooring installed, have the cabinets stained, and then move on to other items in the kitchen. When it all gets completed, I'll post some photos. Thank you all very much!!

I think it will look fine if you use a lighter wall and ceiling color and add more lighting, remove the border and valance on the window to lighten up the top half of the room. Maybe use white glossy subway tile for a backsplash too.

We have a medium-dark floor and went with black-brown cabinets, those elements are dark but our counter - fantasy brown - is fairly light color and we went the BM Mascarpone (warm white) walls and ceiling which is what our LR is and kitchen is now open to LR, and a glossy white subway backsplash. There is also a window with no uppers around it, and we added LED cans. The kitchen seems quite bright to us, and is not made too dark by the cabinets and floor at all.

You could also gel stain the lower cabinets first, and then if it is really too dark (but I don't think so), go with creamy white uppers in milk paint.

Oh, and to get some idea of what glass uppers might look like, take the doors off.
