Hazel, They do make the most gorgeous moths, but I cannot say I blame any tomato grower for not wanting to have them around. It looks like you found quite a few. That's more than I've ever had in one year. One entire year. You may be having a population explosion of them there. Watch for tiny new ones. They are so small that they don't look obviously like hornworms in the youngest instars.

Hazel, I'll bet there's a bird in your area that would lick its lips (if it had any, lol) at those delicious-looking hornworms. They are huge!

I am afraid that wisteria is about to reach the invasive stage. It's been neglected for a couple of years, and has overgrown a gate. But you don't dare mess with it in summer. DH got stung by wasps one year trying to trim it.

We had a neighbor in Ft Worth who cut her wisteria back hard every year...keeping it small like a bonzai. It sat right in the middle of her yard and bloomed every year. Of course, since she kept it so small, there never was a lot of blooms, but it was enough to keep her happy with it.

Hazel......those are some of the biggest tomato horn worms I've ever seen. EW!!! What are you doing with them in that baggy?! Slow death?! lol

Welllll, Melissa. I let them out in a field. Which may have been a mistake. Because, like y'all mentioned (either on this thread or another) they can move surprisingly fast. They probably sniffed out my neighbor's tomatoes a half mile away. "You're welcome, Neighbor."

I found two more last night. I put them under a plastic tray and continued my hunt for four or five more minutes. Then went back to grab those to put in the trash and one was gone. I could NOT find it. It was dark, but I had a flashlight.

HAHAHAAAAA! Hazel you crack me up! We took pictures of the ones we caught because they really are pretty. But.... then I told my son to take care of them. He cleaned his shoe off afterwards. I have something nibbling on one of my hibiscus seedlings that I can't find. A few nights ago I went out and did see a tiny worm and put it out of its misery. Sorry, i didn't take any chances.... those seedlings are my babies. We've actually found some weird bugs lately that I've thrown in the freezer for a science project.
