Thank you, Chiflipper. I was told that larger tile could potentially lead to more cracking down the road since it is upstairs. There is a lot of floor. The bathroom is as large as the bedroom.

Chiflipper, we thought about closing it but it cost too much for various reasons including having to have crown molding milled. You can do anything if you have the money! Lol Plus, my husband & I don't agree on getting rid of the fireplace. I also learned a long time ago that he wouldn't keep a door closed anyway. Closets doors are always open. The tub is on the other side of the fireplace. It will be replaced with a stand alone tub.

Not sure why you would need smaller tile. You'll want smaller for shower floor, to get proper slope and because more grout lines = less slippery. But for the bathroom itself, I see no reason you can't go larger, either squares or I really like longer plank-type tiles myself.

Possibly I've just received bad advice on tile size. Everyone I've talked to though has warned against large tile since it is upstairs & not originally built to carry the weight of tile. Even with restructure they think breakage could be a problem.

Regardless of a tiles size, there are specifications for maximum floor deflection/bounce. A smaller tile will not help, it or the grout joints will crack. Your contractor should be able to determine this and stiffen the floor accordingly.
