On all our grout I used epoxy grout, which costs a lot more to begin with but seems to be impervious to stains. I can't promise that though. Have you tried the bleach routine on the new grout?

I have no idea if it is true, but I was told that bleach breaks down the grout, so to never use it on grout.

Looks like your post is from last year. Did you ever find a solution?

I sympathize with you. We installed white tile with white grout in our bathrooms (15 years ago)- sealed them with super cheap sealant. They get dirty, but clean very easily with a little bleach and water.

In the family room/kitchen we have off white tile with beige grout (different brand than the white we used in the bathrooms because that brand did not have a good match). Since it was in the kitchen, we used a higher end sealant. The grout in those areas- including that which isn't directly in the kitchen and isn't subject to as much staining- is horrible. It discolors and turns grey and looks like it has oil stains in it, and bleach doesn't touch it. The only thing I've found that seems to clean it well is scrubbing bubbles and a grout brush- surprisingly little work if the scrubbing bubbles sit for a few minutes, but then it discolors again in no time. I'm convinced it was the brand of grout and have mostly given up hope on finding a reasonable way to keep it clean.

I used 100% straight bleach and it didn't fix it. I redid the grout and now use a 10% beach solution and it is holding up.

What type of grout was used in your re-grout job, shawn_august?

Get new grout, and then seal it. That's not real discussion, just a period. Doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and you'll be at peace.

I gave the same problem. I got an electric tile brush and cleaned grout with softscrub and water. I used my steam mop first to loosen dirt. After it was clean I use a white grout pen from home depit and looks perfect. If you try it make sure you clean grout thoroughly first and dry and also have some paper toeels to wipe off excess grout paint.

I had the same problem in a brand new bathroom/shower. Every time I went to Home Depot or asked on a forum, I was asked if I was scrubbing it. I was told, always in a condescending tone that infuriated me, that hair products could stain the grout. They were not understanding the problem!! It was clean for heaven's sake; but stained! It drove me insane. I had tried every kind of cleaner, scrubbed until my hands were sore; still stained. I finally dug out the offending grout, re-grouted, sealed it, and three years later, it is still white!! My sanity is re-stored :) My guess is that those parts of the grout that were stained, were improperly sealed.

Try a magic eraser. I have beige grout in my kitchen that was never sealed, and despite cleaning the floors regularly, the grout was dirty. I've tried many different grout cleaners, but the magic eraser worked the best, unbelievable how much better it looks now. You can be very frugal and buy no brand magic erasers at the Dollar Stores, which is what I use, they work just as well as the name brand. Once you get the grout cleaned you can seal it.
