Why not just keep the wall and place a foyer console and mirror or art above.

The octagon opening is really not attractive. Do you need the support from the column on the end?

I'd cut it halfway with ledge. Add narrow console table or if no room for that maybe a half round ledge for small lamp, ceramic bowl for keys...maybe floral arrangement.

I like your octagon wall! It adds interest to the house and I've never seen one before! I would concentrate on decorating the entryway, like was suggested above my post. If you like lattice, you could fill in the octagon opening with lattice. That would add more interest.

The octagon is a serious turn off to me. Wall it over or make it square.

It just looks odd. Would opening up this wall improve lighting or do you want the privacy? I agree with the others, change the shape or drywall the opening.

thanks guys! whoever foreclosed on it did the octagon. it looks funky in the space bc it does not go with the rest of the house. but not worth tearing out bc floor cost. i am just flipping. so want an easy fix. I did not think of filling it in, may not be a horrible idea. or do the ledge for a catch all and decorate with lamp or flowers like suggested.

It will put buyers off. We've had them on Houzz before with negative comments.

HI -- The way it is now is outdated and odd . Either square it out as much as possible or fill it all in . If you open it up, do not have shelves . It will just be a clutter spot that you won't know how to decorate . Myself ... I would just fill it in . I hate pass - through openings/holes ! ....Now I have to tell you a story ( start banjo music here ) ... my brother did this stop sign opening in his house and lined it with , can never be painted real wood and added a shelf across the middle . This is where he displays his re-mote control Hummer truck toy . His wife hated it ! That was probably why she left ! This is no brother of mine with such bad taste ... really !!? It looks like a some back woods thing to do . I am rolling my eyes just telling you this !!

ha ha ha! You could hang back to back Monster Truck Rally posters AND display your remote controlled hummer below! Yeah! No, seriously, if that was the first thing I saw as a potential home buyer when I walked in and the last thing I saw when I walked out it would leave a very bad impression. Personally, I would drywall it in, paint that whole entryway in a creamy white color, and then use a nice mirror (maybe with gold or silver detail) on that wall and a very narrow console table underneath to hold a few beautiful objects; and perhaps a nice natural woven basket underneath the console.

No one wants to look at an octagon when they walk into a house - quite tacky. Your options are either to square up the hole and add shelving (will be the best way to allow for decorations and entry appeal - best option) or to eliminate the wall (can't speak on behalf of your support needs) or drywall over it. You'll have to be the judge of whether you need the wall in your entry way or not. My advice, add bookshelves. Especially with the original hardwood would create a lot of character.
