My kitchen is large with fireplace, breakfast nook and island. The oak cabinets, floor and trim are good quality. I know this looks dated, so: 1. Trying to figure out how to update this look without full replacement and 2. What to do about this ugly mantle and tile and 3. How to furnish this space so it looks more complete and tied together. Note, I love white/gray kitchens but don't want to ruin cabinets with paint. I may be open to new granite, definitely we backsplash.

Also, the entry to the kitchen (left of the fireplace) is a little tight. I have to be careful what I do here so it doesn't jam up the area.

I welcome all suggestions! Color scheme, mantle replacement ideas, enlarging the island maybe?
