Help with my tiny kitchen-Tight Budget

last modified: 13 years ago
What can I do to my kitchen such as changing kitchen doors/worktops or what could I add to make it feel homely. Its rather cool right now. I have a tight budget and need to upgrade even with little accessories.
Any links with images would greatly help.

All the cabinets need to be the same. Home Depot may be able to order a cabinet with the same door front to match the other cabinets. The easiest change to make are the door knobs. It can do amazing things to change the whole look and feel of the kitchen. Have fun with this project!

A new tile backsplash with warmer colors would help. I think the cabinets and counter are pretty, its a nice modern look, changing those would be a big expense. The paint on the wall in a warmer color would help too. I'm having a hard time seeing the open area above the stove. Could you provide a closer view? If you did change the tile, it could be extended up into that area as a focal point.

As the previous post, if you can I would switch out that little white cabinet and add some larger pulls to your cabinets - I like the long pulls with that style and color. If you can do a backsplash, that would help. They carry peel and stick tiles if that is more budget friendly.

Add things like baskets that can store stuff on top of the cabinets. To keep it from looking cluttered make sure they are all the same. You have a yellow tea pot, add a tea towel on the handle of the stove with some pattern and pops of yellow and then get a cute little rug for the floor. Then do as tbenish said, fix the cabinet doors and add a more traditional knob, which will make it feel a little less modern and thus warmer feeling feeling.

Just a trip to home goods would perk up the space.

I don't really think you need new doors OR worktops.

First, have you installed a hood vent yet? If you cook at all you're going to need one. Speaking of cooking, may I ask who your oven is made by? From the looks of your kitchen I suspect you're not in the US. I've never seen one like that and it's quite nifty!

Next, I think you need some color on your backsplash. It looks like you already have tile so that would mean taking it down and replacing with something with more color and pattern.

Is there a way you could box in your water heater next to the sink? That's a bit distracting to me. I don't know the safety concerns of covering it though.

Finally, definitely accessories! Maybe some brightly colored canisters for the countertop to hold things you use daily. Your cabinets and countertop are pretty neutral so you could do almost any color you wanted! I really like the lime green kettle you have now and that could be fun mixed with something with red!

I'm just guessing - but FWIW I don't think the white cabinet IS a cabinet. I think it's a point of use water heater. Notice the blue light on it and the pipe running down the wall.

Greatly appreciate the comments. Quite like the ideas of changing knobs and adding tiles with a warm colour plus backsplash. The area above the stove is just plain. I am thinking of adding a fan/cooker hood with warm lights. All the white things are electrical apppliances - washing machine and boiler and I am also not sure what to do with these.

Some accessories and perhaps changing the wall color above the upper cabinets to provide some contrast.

Can't really see the cabinets and which are a different color. You could completely remove some doors, but I can't see them clearly to see if that would look OK. Could you post some more photos of cabinets?

OK, I guessed right. Can you cover the boiler? Is it safe to do so?

And yes, the hood with warm lights is a great idea not only for looks but for keeping cooking smells from taking over your house.

Onthefence you suspected right- I am in the UK . Will possibly consider boxing the water heater so it matches with there rest of the cupboards- Its very ugly.
Someone mentioned the idea of baskets( Peltier Interiors). I will take that on board and will definately buy these.

personally i quite like your cabinets and countertop so i'd use some of the money saved by not replacing them to move the boiler to a less prominent position, i'd get a new cooker hood to add a focal point, i'd then replace the tiles on the wall and floor with neutral colur such as cream, and above the top cabinets i'd add a splash of colour on the wall maybe to tie in with the colour of your kettle, and then add a few more accessories in the same colour such as tea towels on the bar of the cooker, plant pots on the window sill, canisters on the counter etc good luck :)

I notice that your stove is below you counter-tops is there a way to raise it up to a safer height? I agree a hood would be nice above. Hardware will make a big impact with little expense along with some accessories.
