Need help finding decorative pillows! (Please :) )

Hi! I am a first-time home owner and totally clueless when it comes to decorating. I am totally at a loss as to what decorative pillows to add to my new living room set. Does anyone have any suggestions from the web? I have attached pictures of what I've done so far with my living room.

Also, does that lamp go at all? I could move it to my bedroom if need be...

Any other suggestions on decorating thiswould be greatly appreciated as well!

Thank you so much!!

You could pick any color from your great looking rug for your accent pillows. I am partial to reds/burgandy so that would be my choice. Your pictures above your sofa are too small and placed too high imo. Nice room.

I agree with RoseAbbey, your art is too high on the wall and too small for the area. I think you should rearrange your sofas so that it does not extend beyound the wall.

Use the rug as a guide for pillow colors. Pier One has lots of nice pillows as does Home Goods. Pull the end table closer to the sofa and get a taller chunkier lamp. Get bigger wall art and move it down. Same with the mirror but consider what it is reflecting when you place it.

I wouldn't get any pillows for the sofas. You'll be picking them up off the floor constantly.

Agree about the artwork being too high. I'd lower it and I'd put the third on alongside the other two over the sofa along the wall.

I'd also lower the mirror over the FP.

Instead of pillows, how about a big, colorful lamp for the table between the two sofas? HomeGoods and TJMaxx are great. Pick up some fun decor items at HomeGoods.

As other suggested, your rug gives you nice options of colors for pillows. I like your couches, those are nice. It's nice having 2 full size sofas vs a sofa and loveseat. I like the idea of a throw too.

Art and mirror too high. Push the sofas closer together so that the arms touch. Get a colorful lamp. I have the same arrangement in my family room with 2 leather full size sofas (arms touching) . Love it!

Hi all, Thank you so much for your comments! One thing that you can't really see from my pictures are that the ceilings in the room are tall. REALLY tall. Like 25 feet. Do you still think the pictures are too high?

    Thanks again!

Yes. You need larger pictures and they should be between 8-10 inches above your sofa.

Yes, they are still too high. Your ceilings are going to be tall regardless of what you do so what you want to do is to make the room comfortable for people who are between 5'5" and 6'. That means bringing the pictures down to the level of your eye I think the middle of the picture could be around 58" although because this room is primarily for sitting they could even be lower.

With high ceilings though you could probably add more drama into the room. A more substantial lamp, bigger and more dramatic artwork, and you have a great start with your area rug.

What is the couch with the pictures over it facing?

Unfortunately it's really tough to get pillows to stay properly propped on leather couches. But no harm in trying.

If you have an IKEA nearby, get their down inserts with the velvet covers. They will stay put on your leather sofas and are inexpensive.

You have made a great start with your room! I agree with nosoccermom. Down inserts will work on your leather and velvet covers will be great. Although I don't use my velvet, heavier throws, etc. this time of year. Great for cooler weather and will really cozy up. I have a pillow made from a kilim pillow on a leather loveseat in our office, along with another pillow in a grainsack type fabric. I only use down or down alternative inserts and the pillows are fine on our loveseat. Granted it's in our office and is not used like a den/living room will be. A throw is another great idea for some color. I would pull colors from the rug for both pillows and throw. You also want to add some texture and even print to the room (print on a couple of the pillows). I would add plants and you could use basket type containers for added texture. Lower the art above the sofa and add another one. I'm wondering if you could pull those two down and add 2 more above - not sure if that would be too much - you could do mock-ups with paper and what arrangements works best. A tray on your coffee table with a colorful candle, etc. would be nice too. You've got the basics - just need to add a few finishing touches. I'm not big on homegoods, etc. for decor, but that's me. If you have some antique stores, thrift stores, etc. browse for some interesting decor items, artwork, etc. Homegoods, and those types will be good for the pillows and throw. Keep up the good work - you're almost there!

Thank you so so much for all your comments. They are super helpful and I really appreciate it! I'll get my hubby on lowering the pictures and mirror this weekend.

For the other purchases (lamp, pillows, throw, basket, tray, etc), I should be ok as long as I stick to the colors in the rug, is that correct? I just want to make sure I follow all the rules of decorating!

IKEA Sanela. They are 6.00 and I find the quality comparable to much more expensive ones.

Actually, the very tall walls make it more imperative that you drop the prints and mirror.

Only rule in decorating is: Do I love it?

I agree with all the places mentioned to look for pillows, but keep size in mind also. I have had good luck with Pottery Barn pillows and inserts. They are pricey, but almost always on sale. You can likely find a couple in a print that goes with your rug colors in a large size for the scale of your room. If you have a store nearby you could test them out on one of their leather sofas on display to see if they slide.

I'd go at least 20-22 inches rather than 18 I think. And their throws are often on sale. I typically keep a darker one for the winter and lighten it up with a cream color for the summer. On sale of course.
