Insect egg?

Found several of these "eggs" amongst weeds and rotting wood in my NW NJ garden. Most were round, 1 was oval. I squeezed 1 and it oozed a thick albumin type substance. They seemed like small chicken eggs without the hard shell. I added a golf ball for relative size. Any ideas???
